Civil Enforcement Officers
Job reference: VAC006772
Location: Bristol, various locations
Salary: £25,992 - £27,629 + up to £3,686 shift allowance
Contractual hours: 37
Basis: Full Time, Permanent
The role
If you love being outdoors, working with all kinds of people, in all kinds of places, this is a role that could make your day - every day. It’s certainly a job that will help you keep fit. You’ll get your 10,000 steps in daily. And with shifts all around Bristol, you’ll never get bored of the scenery.
As a Civil Enforcement Officer, you’ll be doing good for our communities. Making sure vehicles are parked appropriately on streets and in car parks, you’ll help keep Bristol’s roads safe and reduce congestion. Issuing Penalty Charge Notices to vehicles that don’t follow the rules, you’ll be promoting fairness and safety.
And the bit that may surprise you? You’ll get to make peoples’ day, daily. After all, you’ll be a very visible ambassador for the Council. Plenty of passers by will have questions, which you’ll be only too happy to answer. Of course, they’ll ask you about much more than parking. You’re as likely to be telling a tourist the best way to a local landmark as you are helping a motorist figure out the best place for them to park.
We’ll set you up for success with a thorough induction week, followed by a fortnight working with your supervisor. You’ll then spend up to six further weeks paired up with another officer, while you build your confidence to go solo. Once you’re up and running, you’ll still enjoy plenty of scope for ongoing training, as well as ongoing support from your supervisor and colleagues.
You’ll get everything you need to be comfy and safe in all weathers – from a full uniform including shoes and protective clothing, to a phone and body worn camera. With a changing room, showers and lockers at base, you won’t need to travel to work in uniform. And wherever a shift takes you, you won’t be far from a spot where you can take a break, microwave a meal and make a brew.
The benefits don’t end there. With a six-week working pattern, you’ll always know your days off well in advance. And with annual leave rising from 25 to 30 days after five years’ service (plus Bank Holidays, naturally) there’s a great work-life balance to be had as a Civil Enforcement Officer.
What you’ll need
So, what are we looking for? First and foremost, you’ll be a real ‘people person’. With experience of working with members of the public, you’ll bring good communication skills. Since not everyone appreciates being found to have broken the rules, you’ll also need the ability to stay calm under pressure and defuse tense situations. Happy working independently, you’re also a true team player. In return, you’ll find lots of scope to progress your career with Bristol City Council. After all, every supervisor and shift manager you meet will have started out in this very role.
Please note this role is subject to a DBS standard check.
Why Bristol City Council?
We go the extra mile for our people. In a fast moving and supportive work environment, you’ll get the chance to use your skills and develop new ones.
Your excellent rewards package will include membership of the Local Government Pension scheme, and a generous annual leave allowance. What’s more, you’ll enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you’re helping to make Bristol a better place, with a bright future.
