Home Office Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles, and property.
The FinOps Engineer ensures service reliability, cost efficiency, and performance in our cloud infrastructure by employing standard methods for financial accountability, security, and monitoring.
Collaborating with architects, engineers, and finance teams, they clarify cost constraints and resource optimisation strategies, effectively communicating trade-offs. They enhance system reliability and performance using FinOps best practices, ensuring scalable and cost-effective cloud environments. By implementing monitoring solutions, they track resource utilisation and align with financial goals. They optimise workflows and automate platforms for cost-effective operations, working under general direction. Collaborating with DevOps colleagues, they share responsibilities in automation, reliability, and cost management.
The FinOps Engineer also enhances skills by staying informed about cloud financial trends and contributes to training engineers in cloud cost governance.
FinOps in DDaT is a key practice that ensures cloud investments drive maximum business value through financial accountability and data-driven decision-making. It fosters collaboration between engineering, finance, and business teams to increase cost visibility and optimize cloud spending without compromising performance.
As a FinOps Engineer, you will enhance cloud cost efficiency while ensuring operational resilience. Collaborating with SRE and Cloud Platform teams, you will refine capacity planning, optimize provisioning, and embed financial accountability into reliability engineering workflows.
You will leverage automation and observability tooling to monitor cloud expenditure in real time, identifying inefficiencies and ensuring cost-effective scaling strategies. Beyond direct cost optimization, you will drive financial awareness, training engineers on FinOps best practices and influencing cost-conscious cloud infrastructure decisions.
Tools and Technologies we use:
We are keen for Engineers to continue learning new technologies, we have a large range in the Home Office including:
* Backend: Java, Node.js, C#, Python, PHP, Scala, Power Platform
* Frontend: React, JavaScript, Typescript, Angular
* Data: PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, Apache Kafka, Neo4J, Amazon Athena
* DevOps: AWS, Kubernetes, Azure, Jenkins, Docker, Ansible, Terraform, Dynatrace
What you will do
Your main day to day responsibilities will be:
* Assisting teams in mapping workloads to cloud platforms, ensuring secure, scalable, and cost-effective deployments while implementing FinOps governance and best practices
* Supporting the development and maintenance of cloud infrastructure by implementing automated provisioning while embedding financial governance to optimize usage and rates
* Identifying cloud architecture inefficiencies and provide guidance on best practices, delivery risks, and cost optimisation strategies using discretion
* Aiding engineers in service topology discovery, helping define quality assurance (QA), deployment, reliability, and cost monitoring frameworks
* Facilitating the adoption of cloud-native tools and FinOps best practices to enhance integration, scalability, operational resilience, and financial efficiency
* Contributing to the development and refinement of cloud support processes, focusing on improving system reliability, observability, incident response, and cost transparency
* Developing dashboards and reporting tools to improve cost transparency, providing internal guidance on FinOps governance, guardrails, and financial accountability
* Providing a general awareness of cloud sustainability (GreenOps)
Like many organisations we need to maintain our services 24/7, therefore, on occasions there may be a requirement to work out of hours, for which you will be paid an additional allowance.
