About the Department Services
The Residential Services Division consists of a Juvenile Detention Center and two post-adjudicated facilities. The facilities house youth who are awaiting court and youth who are placed into the department’s custody by the juvenile courts. The facilities provide direct care and supervision for all youth placed with the department along with providing mental health and behavioral treatment programs.
About the Position
The therapist provides therapeutic activities and counseling services including individual, group, and family interventions to youth under the supervision of the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD). Furthermore, this position is expected to assist in providing safe and secure custody of youth to reduce the potentially negative effects of incarceration while accentuating socially acceptable behavior.
Required Experience/Education
• Bilingual (Spanish Speaking) required.
• MS/MA from an accredited college or university in clinical or counseling psychology and/or social work.
• Applicant must be fully licensed in clinical or counseling psychology and/or social work within three (3) years of date of hire.
• One (1) year of post master’s clinical experience or at least two (2) semesters of internship in the Psychological and Social Services Unit of Harris County Juvenile Probation or in Harris County Children’s Forensic Unit.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Responsible for providing individual, group, and family therapy to HCJPD youth and their families.
• Conduct psychosocial/clinical assessments and supportive psychosocial counseling for youth.
• Plan and conduct fun and creative therapeutic activities with youth on the unit.
• Provide crisis intervention to youth and relevant clinical/administrative functions such as clinical staffing, medication monitoring, and staff training. Identify and refer youth for psychiatric services.
• Provides consultation to HCJPD Youth Development Coaches and Coordinators regarding behavioral, adjustment issues, case planning, and treatment needs including providing advocacy and collaborative efforts to ensure related services are provided to assigned youth.
• Maintain regular contact with the youth’s guardian to provide updates on treatment.
• Maintains clear, timely, and concise documentation of treatment efforts in compliance with Health Services and Residential Services policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Accurate assessment and conceptualization of juveniles’ emotional state, and if needed, initiate and implement necessary intervention in accordance with the unit and departmental guidelines.
• Demonstrate use of good judgment, and when necessary, initiate and implement a corrective action to address the identified problem in accordance with the unit and departmental guidelines with or without supervision.
• Demonstrate ability to incorporate therapeutic themes into fun daily activities of youth.
• Timely documentation of all assessments and clinical notes.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
• Consistently produces accurate and informative assessments and clinical progress notes.
• Make use of supervision, consultation, and feedback to improve work quality.
• Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds, with occasionally standing, walking, bending, pulling and pushing.
• Must be 21 years of age.
Work Schedule
• This is a Full-time position. Typical workday (Monday – Friday), late nights and weekends as scheduled.
• Be available for 24 hour emergency call.
