Electrical Design Engineer
Duration - 6 Months with scope to extend
Location - Manchester - 2 days per week in office
Summary
This exciting opportunity is for a self-motivated electrical/EC&I engineer, with experience to contribute to project delivery from day one, but also a desire to grow with the team in capability and responsibility. The role is in our Public & CHP Sector business, delivering energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects for large Public Sector bodies, hotels, leisure centres, industrial clients, etc. Working alongside a Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for preparing electrical and control engineering deliverables. Your contribution will span the full project lifecycle from site surveys and initial concept, through detailed design, to commissioning support and handover.
You will be a proficient electrical engineer, degree-qualified or equivalent, with experience in power distribution, control systems, or building services. This may also suit candidates from an electrical installation background who wish to move into a design role. Candidates should be able to demonstrate working knowledge of a broad range of technologies such as generators, heat pumps, transformers, switchgear, cables, earthing, controls & instrumentation.
The role entails hybrid working with attendance if required at suitable nearest offices (Stockport/Windsor). Candidates must be prepared to travel UK-wide on occasion as site surveys and installation quality checks will be expected.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Design of distributed generation and renewable energy schemes
2. Detailed design of LV distribution systems
3. Specification of HV installation works
4. Design for compliance with GB Distribution Code (G99, G100 etc)
5. Electrical calculations including load estimation, equipment sizing, cable & protection device selection
6. Selection & specification of electrical equipment for integration with CHP, heat pumps, and district heating systems
7. Preparing construction-ready detailed designs: single line diagrams, control panel drawings, block cable diagrams, cable schedules, lists of materials, and design risk assessments
8. Defining scope of works and interfaces for subcontractor packages
9. Proficiency with AutoCAD LT and Amtech (or equivalent)
10. Experience of EPLAN will be an advantage
11. Knowledge of legislation, standards, safe working practice, and environmental best practice
12. Knowledge of control systems for power management and building controls (PLCs, SCADA, BMS, etc)
13. Knowledge of earthing and/or lightning protection an advantage
14. Knowledge of fire detection, machinery safety, or metering an advantage
15. Capable of working to procedures, both Client and CBS
16. Ensure that drawings are produced quickly and accurately in a consistent format with the minimum of supervision
17. Capable of fitting into a department that is dynamic and has high expectations of meeting targets
18. A collaborative approach is essential - must be a good team worker, prepared to share knowledge and assist others to improve their skills
19. Sound presentation and communication skills
20. Must be able to write clear and concise English, e.g., technical sections in tender response documents
21. Willing to be flexible in the role, e.g., assist the Sales, Commercial, Procurement, or Construction teams, where required
22. Will be personally well-organised and be able to prioritise work in line with CBS interests
Requirements:
1. Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and energy technologies, with some post-education experience.
2. Attention to detail: Ability to apply a thorough approach to each stage of the design process from concept to detail design.
3. Cross-functional communication: Ability to communicate across all levels and have the ability to converse and collaborate across all internal and external teams of varying technical or commercial bias to enable a successful outcome.
4. Safety in Design: Able to comply with CDM 2015 regulations and contribute towards design safety reviews and design risk assessments.
5. Excellent communication, with the ability to explain engineering solutions.
6. Demonstrate good attention to detail and show pride in the work you produce.
7. You can work using your own initiative with minimal supervision in the majority of technical aspects of your discipline.
8. Preferably, you will have experience across different sectors such as Building Services Design, site surveys & inspections, snagging, client & design team meetings.
