About us
At The City Academy, Hackney, we are dedicated to providing all the students in our community with the best possible educational opportunities. We believe excellence is achieved through three key ingredients: clear structures, high expectations and strong relationships. Our outstanding curriculum is built around ‘The City Experience’; which places value on academic, creative, sporting, linguistic and personal development.
We pride ourselves on being a school which offers young people an environment that enables them to meet our very high expectations. There are clear boundaries and rules which students must adhere to at all times. They must exhibit exemplary character and conduct and demonstrate respect, kindness and politeness towards each other and the adults. We expect students to work hard and to show dedication to their education. Our inspirational staff are skilled and committed, and as a result, our students make exceptional progress, both in terms of examination success and personal development, learning skills and values they will need to be successful in later life.
We are part of the City of London Academies Trust. Our Trust believes strongly in the transformational nature of education, operating schools in areas of significant disadvantage. Understanding that strong outcomes lead to improved life chances for our students, Trust schools are unashamedly academic and unapologetically results driven. Each school adopts a ‘warm/strict’ approach, combining high expectations with care and support. Our level of care means we never compromise on standards or ambitions, ensuring that no student’s background becomes a reason for lowering the bar. Trust schools maintain exemplary standards of behaviour, with systems, routines and norms that instil strong habits. Our schools therefore provide a place where teachers can teach, and students can learn, without disruption. As a Trust we take great pride in fostering an exceptionally positive learning environment and we work meticulously to maintain our strong ethos and culture.
The City of London Academies Trust combines the heritage and tradition of the Corporation of London with a genuinely innovative, enterprising, and entrepreneurial ethos. We offer a calm, orderly and respectful environment, and we look for ambitious and culturally aligned staff who are enthusiastic, hardworking, conscientious and energetic individuals. Our people want to work with students to ensure that, regardless of their background and circumstances, they will achieve to the best of their ability. In return, we offer a range of staff benefits and development opportunities which support your professional and career development. You will be able to learn from some of the best and most able practitioners in the country. There is a far-reaching commitment to ensuring that all our staff are given the access to excellent training and induction programmes.
About the role
We are recruiting casual Exam Invigilators to help us run internal and public exams over the summer exam season, with the potential to remain as part of a pool of Invigilators for ad hoc work throughout the year. The role involves supervising students taking examinations, ensuring that the Joint Council for Qualifications regulations and examination board requirements are fully implemented.
Working with the Examinations Officer and a team of Invigilators, you will help prepare the exam room, oversee the seating of students, distribute and collect up exam papers, and assist with timekeeping. You will be responsible for responding to relevant student queries and dealing with any behavioural or emergency issues.
We don't expect you to have prior experience of invigilation, but to have been active in supervising young people and/or encouraging their learning. You must be able to work effectively within a team and have excellent communication skills. You will also be well-organised, accurate and have good attention to detail. Reliability and punctuality are essential attributes, as is an ability to use your initiative, dealing calmly with unexpected situations and knowing when to seek advice.
We will provide full training for you to undertake this role on a designated Induction Day, to be arranged. You must be available to work during May and June (excluding bank holidays), although the days and sessions can be flexible. Note that Invigilators are required to be available from 7.45am on examination days.
