Overview
The Environmental Manager position is responsible for ensuring that the construction work being done in a project is in compliance with the environmental regulations relating to waste, clean resources such as water, energy, and other similar matters.
Responsibilities
1. Attendance at relevant functional sustainability team meetings.
2. Proactively contributing to the ongoing development of the Sustainability Management System.
3. Know, understand and promote the Sustainability Management System, Strategy and 2030 Sustainability Roadmap to deliver continual improvement.
4. Share knowledge and best practice across the project(s) and function.
5. Understand the company Sustainability Policy and Procedures and statutory requirements as they affect the company’s operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented.
6. Develop and implement actions to achieve project sustainability objectives and targets.
7. Ensuring compliance of the Sustainability Management System at site level, including supporting the population and review of the Project SEEP and associated documentation.
8. Attend and assist with project Sustainability MS Compliance audits/inspections, including external audits by certification bodies on appointed projects.
9. Liaise with client, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on matters of environmental management and sustainability.
10. Support the reporting and monitoring of Sustainability performance against KPIs.
11. Maintain and build upon own knowledge and competency in relation to Environmental Management and responsibilities including appropriate qualifications and professional membership.
12. Provide advice and guidance on the prevention of environmental incidents and complaints, and the practical implementation of the company policies.
13. Lead and support the reporting and investigation of environmental incidents and support the business to implement controls to prevent repeat occurrence.
14. Provide advice and guidance for obtaining legal consents, licences, permits, exemptions, Material Management Plans etc, as and when required, and as directed.
Experience
1. At least 5 years environmental experience in a construction environment or similar.
2. Relevant experience of roads and highways projects.
3. Experience of working with EPA, Local Authorities, Community groups etc.
4. Full relevant driver’s licence and flexibility to travel where required.
5. Experience of supporting environmental inspections and audits of projects.
6. Application of legal, technical and regulatory information to the construction process.
7. Communication skills, both written and oral.
8. Good IT skills.
9. Developing analytical problem-solving skills.
10. Influencing skills and ability to manage challenging conversations.
11. Experience engaging with senior management to deliver internal system compliance and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications
1. Relevant degree and/or professional qualification.
2. Associate (Practitioner) IEMA Membership.
3. Incident Investigation Training (desirable).
