Temporary Motor Vehicle Mechanic

Pay Rate: up to £14.77 per hour PAYE depending on experience
37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours
This opening assignment is for 4 months
City: OLDHAM
Responsible to the Workshop Manager for the inspection and testing of vehicles to the required standards of the Council and the Department of Transport.
Undertake the maintenance and repair, to a range of vehicles and machines and plant equipment, to the required quality standards, in an efficient and cost effective manner.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsible for testing in accordance with D.O.T testers manual:
a) Hackney carriage and private hire vehicles
b) Private motor vehicles, dual purpose vehicles
c) All Council owned vehicles
Complete all documentation and paperwork in relation to tests, as required by the Fleet Managers and D.O.T
Control the inspection and maintenance of the division’s test equipment and ensure the accuracy of the inventory.
Carry out random checks on completed or partially complete work for quality assessment purposes and to take appropriate action to prevent / minimise recurrence of sub-standard work.
Ensure that safe working practices are observed in accordance with departmental policies and provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Monitor the standards of vehicle examination by other Council examiners
Undertake planned service and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment.
Diagnose faults, recommend and undertake cost effective repairs
Repair of vehicles/equipment as instructed.
Carry out auto electrical repairs.
Qualifications:
City & Guilds Part 1, 2 & 3 in (Motor Vehicle Technology) or equivalent qualification.
LGV Class C licence
Department of Transport MOT Examiner for Vehicles classes III, IV and V
Knowledge:
Knowledge of electrical systems on vehicles, machinery and plant
Knowledge of the departments quality systems
Knowledge of MOT Requirements.
Experience:
Experience of undertaking service and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment.
Experience of carrying out welding and fabrication, auto electrical, vehicle and equipment recoveries and repairs.
Experience of diagnosing and repairing vehicle hydraulic equipment & electrical systems.
Experience of carrying out MOTs for Vehicle Classes III, IV and V and completing associated paperwork
Ideally, at least 12 months experience of working on commercial vehicles and some small plant
Skills & Abilities:
Ability to maintain test equipment to the standard as required by legislation.
Able to work with Health and Safety guidelines
Ability to work with minimum supervision repairing and servicing vehicles to manufacturer's standards and times
Ability to display a calm, tactful and responsible attitude.
