Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Anaesthesia, at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, Middlesex. The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital is pleased to announce we have a 10PA locum consultant anaesthetist post available. The anaesthetic department is proud to be a diverse and inclusive department where all new colleagues receive a warm and friendly welcome. You will be joining a department with 40 consultants who provide a large elective and emergency provision to a wide range of services. 10 Programmed Activities will be offered - 9 Direct Clinical Care delivered over 4/3 days and 1 Supporting Professional Activities. There may be the need to add an on call commitment in either ITU or Theatre. The appointment is for the fixed period of ten months. Job plans will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant. It is expected that the initial job plan will be reviewed after 3 months service.
Main duties of the job
The key duties will include, but not be limited to:
1. Provision of high quality anaesthetic care
2. Clinical Supervision and support of junior anaesthetic staff
3. Active participation in departmental, Trust and national clinical audit
4. Engagement with the Trust's appraisal programme for medical staff
5. Regular timetabled activities in the preoperative department
6. Preoperative assessment
7. Regional anaesthesia provision
The specific job plan will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant. Initial job plan will include sessions with the majority of services provided at the RNOH, including the peripheral nerve injury unit, sarcoma unit and joint replacement unit. In addition to theatre sessions, the appointee will be expected to provide assessment and management of patients attending the preoperative clinics.

Our range of services includes Joint Reconstruction, Spinal Surgery, Bone Tumour & Soft Tissue Sarcomas (supra regional service), Peripheral Nerve Injury, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Congenital Deformity, and Complex & Revision Joint Work. There is also a dedicated Spinal Cord Injury Centre receiving referrals from London and the South of England. Our clinical effectiveness is enhanced by working in partnership with University College London and the UCL Institute of Orthopaedic and Musculo-skeletal Science, based within the Stanmore Campus. Our main hospital site at Stanmore is located in extensive grounds set amongst green belt countryside. There is easy road access from the M1, the A1(M) and the A41. We are within easy reach of London. There is a free bus service to and from the two local tube stations on the Northern and Jubilee lines. Currently there is free parking within the hospital grounds. There is an outpatient department facility at Bolsover Street, near Great Portland Street tube.
Job responsibilities
The specific job plan will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant. It is expected that the initial job plan will be reviewed after 3 months of service. Initial job plan will include sessions within all major units at the RNOH including the peripheral nerve injury unit, sarcoma unit, joint replacement unit and the preoperative assessment department.
Job plans may be changed to accommodate where possible the specific requests of the candidate and the needs of the department.
Currently the Trust permits flexibility in time and space to accommodate SPAs.
Non-fixed commitments
1. Join the team of consultant anaesthetists who provide anaesthesia at RNOH
2. Provide pre and post operative care
3. Participate in the teaching of trainee anaesthetists
4. Participate in postgraduate academic meetings of the anaesthetic department and departmental audit
5. Attend consultant administrative departmental meetings
6. Undertake audit of personal practice
7. Improve service delivery and participate with clinical governance in line with local and national guidelines
8. Undertake research
Person Specification
Qualifications
* FRCA or GMC recognised equivalent qualification
* CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent training
* On Specialist Registrar or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
* ALS
* APLS/EPLS
Experience
* Experience in Anaesthesia for specialist complex orthopaedic surgery
* Experience of Anaesthesia for spinal deformity
Skills
* Proven leadership and organisational skills
* Effectively work within a team environment
* Commitment to CME and revalidation
* Experience in clinical research and teaching
* Evidence of using large databases to deliver efficient and effective system redesign
Management Skills
* Understanding the NHS management structure
* Evidence of management training
* History of CIP involvement and delivery
Teaching and Training
* Evidence of interest in teaching and training
* Teaching course
* Evidence of ability to undertake assessments of trainees
* Demonstrate an interest in teaching and training
