Main Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the Future Generations Manager, the Environmental Clerk of Works will join an existing team providing advice on ecological and environmental areas during the construction phases of the project. Typical issues include protected species, pollution, surface water management, material management, air quality and noise. On a day-to-day basis, the responsibilities of the Environmental Clerk of Works will include the following (not exhaustive):
1. Conducting ecological and habitat surveys, producing reports with recommendations for mitigation and site survey records.
2. Providing continued site checks for notable and protected species prior to clearance and destructive searches.
3. Monitoring sites and providing advice to the site construction teams regarding ecological constraints and mitigation solutions.
4. Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, planning conditions and associated documents (e.g. Construction Environment Management Plan CEMP) and to help reduce risks and delays.
5. Being a key point of contact for client and stakeholder relationship, working closely with staff and contractors from several disciplines, notably ecologists, hydrologists, planners and engineers, to provide an integrated ECoW service.
6. Having a good understanding of wider ECoW complex issues and the ability to liaise with other specialists and Griffiths regional Environmental Advisor to raise issues and provide solutions.
7. Supervising contractors and ensuring compliance with protected species licence requirements and environmental protection measures.
8. Assisting in the development, review and approval process where requested, of environmental risk assessments, aspects and impacts, and work package plans.
9. Investigating all environmental non-conformances and audit findings, making recommendations and supporting the delivery of suitable and adequate corrective and preventative actions required.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful Environmental Clerk of Works will be instrumental in the future development of the environmental and economics of our culture to achieve the benefits available through our continuous improvement strategies. You will have experience within a similar role, ideally on large civil engineering projects. It is essential that any prospective candidates are in receipt of any of the following Qualifications/Requirements/Capabilities:
1. Experience as an Ecological/Environmental Clerk of Works (ECoW), particularly on large civil engineering projects.
2. Degree or Diploma in Ecology / Environmental discipline or other relevant qualification.
3. Have experience of a wide range of ecological issues relating to de-vegetation works, including protected species surveys and mitigation.
4. Good knowledge and experience of environmental and sustainability management systems, such as ISO 14001, ISO 50001, ISO 20400, BS 8001.
5. Full Member of CIEEM or equivalent.
6. Good cross-business team working, with experience of influencing staff at all levels and being able to communicate this both written and verbally.
7. Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
