An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead the nursing team on the Metabolic ward based at Sunderland Royal Hospital. It is a 27 bedded Acute Medical Ward specialising in Metabolic medicine with a number of general medical patients. It is a very busy ward due to the diversity and dependency of patients admitted. A high number of patients are admitted/ transferred to the ward with DKA and complex Metabolic needs.
We are looking to recruit a dedicated and highly motivated individual who is passionate about providing high quality and compassionate care to our patients. We are looking for a clinical leader who will demonstrate role modelling, empowerment, and support to our clinical team and provide leadership and high quality nursing care.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, team working skills and will be dedicated to improving the patients' experience. You will need to demonstrate continuing professional development and a strong commitment to develop others and work closely within a multi-disciplinary team. The Ward Manager will be expected to support the Matron and the Ward Team to maintain a patient focused positive experience and environment.
You will be required to work evenings and weekends.
Job responsibilities
* The Ward/Department Manager has 24 hour accountability for patient safety and patient experience on their ward/department, including line management of their staff.
* They must deliver high quality nursing care by ensuring appropriate systems and processes are in place to provide the continuity of safe and effective care at all times.
* They will act as a champion for professional accountability and standards, ensuring that professional practices are in line with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and Trust Policy.
* Ensure environmental standards and cleanliness of the ward/department are maintained in line with Trust and National standards.
* Effectively manage the ward/department nursing resource, ensuring that staff rotas are able to deliver safe and effective patient care.
* Support and contribute to the development of patient care and nursing practice within the Directorate. Supervising junior staff. Contribute to Trust wide projects as required.
* Ensure effective line management of staff and ensure they are supported in performing to their full potential. Ensure junior staff have appropriate support and supervision and are appropriately assessed.
* To comply with the trusts vision, values and behavioural compact.
Person Specification
Skills & Knowledge
* Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information.
* Able to work without supervision.
* Competent in the use of IT software such as Microsoft Office.
* Evidence of CPD.
* Knowledge of national health and social care policy.
* Knowledge of evidence based guidelines e.g. NICE guidelines, NPSA alerts, current nursing legislation.
Qualifications
* Degree in nursing studies or relevant equivalent.
* Practice Assessor/Supervisor or recent evidence of having facilitated learning in practice.
* Management and Leadership Training.
Physical Skills
* Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
Experience
* Experience of change management in ward/dept area.
* Thorough understanding of contemporary nursing issues.
* Experience of leading a team.
* Evidence of innovation in practice.
* Participation in recruitment and selection process.
* Experience of working at Band 6 and/or Band 7 as a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse and/or Ward Manager.
