Our client is part of the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, a public body responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient clean-up of the UK’s nuclear legacy. Their work involves a range of activities for safely transporting materials to and from nuclear sites and providing nuclear transport solutions for a range of customers based in the UK and overseas.
They also provide transport services outside of the nuclear sector, operating a number of intermodal rail services in consumer goods and general freight markets.
We are recruiting for an experienced Lead Design Engineer to join our client based in Warrington on a 6-month contract basis; the client can be flexible on the location and extension of the contract for the right person.
You will be responsible for leading the delivery of engineering design tasks or projects to meet agreed time, cost, and quality objectives. This includes the line management of design engineers and third-party suppliers. You will also lead the delivery of Radioactive Material (RAM) transport engineering activities and projects and provide technical advice to NTS and clients.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Define and lead the delivery of RAM transport system engineering design activities and projects.
2. Direct, author, and collate transport safety cases that demonstrate full compliance with IAEA SSR-6 regulations.
3. Ensure all technical substantiation work supporting authored transport safety cases are of appropriate quality and internal consistency.
4. Working knowledge of IAEA SSR-6 regulations and ability to directly discuss and defend interpretations of specific clauses with the Competent Authority.
5. Support to design engineers and checking of their work.
6. Monitoring and reporting of work against schedule and budget, and other KPIs as agreed.
7. Work to current management processes and systems and contribute to their continued development and improvement.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed (Essential/Desirable):
The role requires an experienced professional design engineer with sufficient knowledge and experience to define and lead an engineering activity or small project:
1. Relevant degree in engineering (ideally mechanical), or equivalent academic qualifications and experience.
2. Recognised professional engineering qualification.
3. Demonstrable experience/knowledge/understanding of engineering design and substantiation as applied to RAM transport.
4. Ability to define scopes of work, including development of technical risk identification and mitigation strategies.
5. Ability to work and communicate effectively with other areas of NTS and/or the client to ensure solutions meet the stated intent.
6. Experience and capability to lead an engineering activity or small project with minimal guidance, support, and/or checking required.
