Chair Keelman Homes Limited is a not-for-profit registered provider for affordable homes based in Gateshead. We own over 300 homes for affordable rent, rent to buy and shared ownership, and we are aiming to develop more homes for affordable use within the Borough of Gateshead in the coming years. Our rental homes are all for general needs users – we know that during the current cost of living crisis, the demand for everyday people to access affordable housing is high. We have an exciting opportunity for a new Chair to join our incredibly committed and experienced Board. As Chair, you will work closely with the Managing Director and the Trustees (including our Deputy Chair) to shape the future direction of the company.You will play a crucial role ensuring good governance is adhered to, and you will encourage debate and challenge at meetings. As Chair you will be legally responsible for controlling the company and charity’s management and administration. You are also responsible for shaping the overall strategic direction of the charity. The purpose of the role is to provide direct oversight of the company strategically and operationally; this includes ensuring risk is monitored/reduced, and performance and compliance key performance indicators are being met, ensuring tenants are satisfied, safe and that as a Landlord, the service being delivered is fit for purpose and provides value for money. Candidates will be able to demonstrate: A strong personal commitment to: - the mission and objects of Keelman Homes; promoting the interests of our tenants and leaseholders; and providing housing to people in need. Ideally, experience of operating within a board or committee structure in a charitable, public sector or commercial organisation. Capacity to contribute actively to the strategic direction of Keelman Homes. An ability to think strategically. Confident and effective communication and influencing skills. A proven track record of effective, independent, decision making. An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship. Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team that makes collective strategic decisions and to accept collective corporate responsibility for decision making. Personal credibility, with an ability to act as an organisation champion with a variety of stakeholders. A record of personal integrity and behaviours consistent with Nolan's seven principles of public life. Confirmation of a willingness to give at least the minimum time commitment required for the role. We are looking for an experienced Chair, and by that we mean someone who has served on another Board or at a senior management level. The ideal candidate will have experience of leading a team and will take both a creative and pragmatic approach to problem solving… a strategic thinker. In order to enhance the collective skills on the existing board, the Chair will have experience in one or more of the following areas: Housing Management Knowledge of the social or affordable housing sector, and associated regulatory governance Customer regulation and community relations Business planning (strategic and finance) New build development experience Corporate governance You will enjoy contributing ideas to inspire overall direction, thinking outside of the box, while also understanding the regulatory framework we work within.
