Junior Clinical Fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics
This post is ideal for doctors aiming to work towards a Core Surgical Training Programme application. Day-to-day care of patients on the Trauma and Orthopaedic wards at Royal Sussex County Hospital as part of the Orthopaedic Trauma team. MDT management of Major Trauma Patients. T&O Theatre and Clinic experience.
Post available from as soon as possible to 5th August 2025. The post holds a month notice period.
Main duties of the job
The clinical duties of the post include the following: the rota will be fine-tuned to accommodate the training needs of the post holder and the needs of the department. The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior.

The Orthopaedic Department
The Trauma & Orthopaedic department comprises 31 consultants, 2 associate specialists, 12 specialist registrars, 7 senior fellows, 24 FY2-CT2 SHO level doctors, 4 FY1 doctors, and 1 student ACP. We have three full-time trauma coordinators and provide consultant-led care across all orthopaedic sub-specialties, with daily consultant ward rounds on both sites.
Job responsibilities
Ideally, you have decided on Trauma and Orthopaedics as your preferred career or are in an allied specialty with an interest in surgery. You will have an active interest in improving the quality of care within the Trust. You will be capable of managing projects both independently and under supervision and be skilled at teamwork. Regular supervision meetings with a training Consultant will help you shape your future career.
Person Specification
Experience & Qualifications
* Basic Medical Degree
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
Clinical Skills & Experience
* Competencies equivalent to completion of FY1, as a minimum
* Experience of work as a doctor in the NHS (i.e., formal contractual work, not clinical attachment).
Teaching Skills
* Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching
* Recognised teaching qualification
Academic & Research
* Evidence of participation in audit
* Research Experience
* Publications
* Appropriate progression of career to date
