This role will:
* Provide strategic advice to enable a step change in fire management at facilities in STFC.
* Work with profession leaders in health and safety, estates and departments to enable a change in approach to the assessment of risk and to mitigation in fire safety.
* Apply extensive operational and management experience of major national science facilities to enable the reduction in risk of major disruption from fire.
* Lead on department engagement to ensure senior staff in each department are leading on Fire culture. Facilitate access and department support to enable strategies and BFRA. Identify resource needs, training needs etc in each department.
* Review and comment on emerging policy and process drafts.
* ISIS – Identifying opportunities for asset protection – this may then be applicable across STFC.
The postholder will enable a more strategic view and discussion of fire mitigation. The role will liaise with the Head of Safety, Fire Management and Estates to work towards a common approach to fire management across STFC.
The role will lead the discussion- enhanced mitigation policy through changes in approach to building design in the operational estate across the RAL site. The postholder will draw on extensive knowledge of the site and the operations of large national science facilities, as well as the present systems of fire management.
The postholder will work with department directors and those parties responsible to deliver agreed changes, acting to facilitate both compliance and improved levels of engagement.
Key Attributes
* Extensive knowledge of operational management of large science facilities.
* Extensive experience of the RAL estate, its management and processes
* Extensive knowledge of RAL and STFC safety systems
* Able to interpret regulations and generate new options for delivering compliance
* Pragmatic and open-minded
* Ability to take on board issues and determine to root causes
* Articulate and able to take people with them
* Resolution of complex/difficult problems, often requiring creative thought and interpretation
* Experience in mentoring senior staff.
