Role:
SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. The ‘Cost Management Lead’ is a critical role in SPT Strategic Projects focusing on the standup and implementation of robust cost control processes across the portfolio, serving as the portfolio’s technical Cost expert. The Cost Management Lead will oversee cost estimating and cost control activities across the projects including assessment of project budgets developed by project Cost Engineers.
The role reports to the Strategic Portfolio PMO Lead and may require frequent travel to various locations in the UK.
What you will be doing:
1. Leads the definition, implementation and continuous improvement of Cost Management standards.
2. Owns and maintains the Strategic Portfolio Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS).
3. Integrates Earned Value (EV) data into cost reporting.
4. Leads the month-end financial/cost reporting process.
5. Monitors Contractors’ cost performance.
6. Ensures alignment between schedule and cost baselines.
7. Supports the Value of Work Done (VoWD) process.
8. Leads the recruitment, onboarding, and allocation of Cost Engineers.
9. Conducts quality reviews of cost forecasts.
10. Generates and presents portfolio-wide cost reports and metrics.
11. Maintains the Cost Management System (CMS).
12. Oversees the cash flow reporting and forecasting process.
13. Identifies and resolves cost-related issues.
14. Contributes to continuous improvement of the Strategic Portfolio.
What you will bring:
1. Extensive experience (15+ years) in Cost Management on large EPC projects.
2. Degree-qualified in a relevant field (e.g., Engineering, Finance, or Quantity Surveying).
3. Expert knowledge of cost management methodologies.
4. Proven ability to develop and manage complex cost structures.
5. Exceptional communication skills.
6. Strong analytical and presentation skills.
7. Advanced proficiency in industry-standard tools and systems.
8. Demonstrated ability to integrate Earned Value Management (EVM).
9. Experience managing cost implications of NEC4 contracts.
10. Strong problem-solving skills.
11. Ability to influence decisions at all organisational levels.
12. Proven experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.
13. Experience in mentoring and upskilling junior cost management professionals.
14. Knowledge of cash flow forecasting and VoWD processes.
15. Ability to drive continuous improvement in cost management processes.
Minimum Requirements:
* Experience in cost management within NEC3/NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) frameworks.
* Proficiency in IT systems, including MS Office Suite, SAP, S4 HANA, and PowerBI.
* Proven expertise in cost control, including budget management, forecasting, and variance analysis.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
