The clinical work comprises the receipt, resuscitation, initial treatment and diagnosis of undifferentiated emergency attendees presenting 24hours per day to a modern emergency department. You will provide supervision for junior clinical staff working in the ED during shop floor duties, and flexibility during working hours to further support the department if required. There are regular consultant-led ED safety rounds to ensure that all patients in the department have a clear management plan in place at all times, as well as a focus on comfort and dignity. We encourage close liaison with the inpatient teams throughout the day to optimise patient management & flow. You will be supported in developing and maintaining your professional clinical, educational, and academic interests. The trust runs a series of Consultant Masterclasses for new consultants and attendance is actively encouraged by the Medical Director. Management duties may include organisation and facilitation of teaching (including simulation teaching), attendance at internal and external committees, staff recruitment and appointment, and the continuation and development of clinical governance, audit and quality improvement projects. The Consultants as a group, in conjunction with the Specialist Registrars in the Department, organise and take part in teaching programmes for junior medical staff, medical students, nurses and paramedics who train in the department. Various other ad hoc teaching arrangements may be made through personal contacts. Medical students from Leicester are seconded to the ED throughout the year, while some also undertake electives in Pre-hospital and Emergency Medicine in the spring.
