Sustainable Travel Officer (Schools) We have an exciting opportunity for a Sustainable Transport Officer to join Southampton City Council’s (SCC) Transport Policy and Sustainable Travel (TPST) team. The TPST team has a proven track record of successful delivery of active travel and sustainable transport projects. The team is passionate, driven and are committed to helping our city’s residents make smarter choices about the way they travel to benefit their physical and mental health, their local environment, and air quality. The Sustainable Transport Officer role is in the School Travel Team where we work with schools to identify barriers to active travel and road safety issues, and jointly develop action plans to address these issues through behaviour change initiatives, enforcement and infrastructure. As a Sustainable Transport Officer, you will be working closely with around 20 schools to deliver projects and initiatives to increase the number of pupils and their families travelling actively and sustainably during peak school travel hours. You will manage the day to day running of Southampton City Council’s successful School Streets project, support on the development and delivery of our Safer Routes to School programme, and deliver targeted campaigns, practical activities and events to enhance the impact of these schemes. Further responsibilities include: The development of school travel plans and delivery of exciting behaviour change initiatives to encourage and enable active travel. Assisting with the development, delivery and activation of Safer Routes to School schemes. Enhancing and expanding Southampton City Council’s School Streets project. Working collaboratively with other teams to deliver on SCC’s Connected Southampton 2040 objectives. Management of complimentary sustainable transport projects. About you: Good working theoretical and practical knowledge across the area of sustainable travel planning and the strategic and policy framework within which the job is undertaken. Excellent and highly developed communication, negotiation and persuasive skills. Strong project management and organisational skills A proven track record of customer focus, quality and performance Professional expertise and experience in providing sustainable travel initiatives and the ability to understand needs and priorities of individuals to enable effective behaviour change.
