The University of Southampton’s Widening Participation and Social Mobility (WPSM) directorate is recruiting for a Student Inclusion Officer (Assessment) on a full-time and fixed-term basis, focusing on a project to understand differential experiences or practices for students from low socioeconomic groups and those with Black heritage, as detailed in our new Access and Participation Plan (APP). The successful candidate will inform the University’s Advancing Assessment project, aiming to transform assessment thinking and practice.
The role involves collaborating across the institution with students, academics, and Professional Services staff to develop a research project around assessment and its aligned processes impacting those from low socioeconomic groups and Black heritage. This includes developing research questions, seeking stakeholder feedback, and creating a final report with recommendations to ensure progress towards APP objectives.
The postholder will be managed by a Student Inclusion Manager within the Student Success team, with additional matrix management from the Enhancement Manager to align with wider directorate work on academic skills.
The ideal candidate will understand the challenges in higher education, with experience in academic research, evaluation, or teaching development. They will develop an empirical understanding of degree awarding gaps and have experience in evidence-based practice, innovative evaluation approaches, and various research methods. The role requires independent work and collaboration with key stakeholders.
The University welcomes applications from widening participation backgrounds, especially ethnically minoritised backgrounds. The role involves both office and remote working.
