Job Description:
Do you want to be a part of a team designing the next generation of IR Sensors for Space and Defence Sectors? At Leonardo, we are seeking a Mechanical Engineer, working in the field of Infra-Red Sensors, which are utilized by NASA, ESA and a variety of Defence programmes.
This opportunity will require the successful candidate to work across the entire Engineering lifecycle, encompassing concept design, development model builds, production support and beyond. The IR Detectors Team is based at our Southampton facility, but affords a mixture of on-site and remote working. All members of the Mechanical Engineering Team are encouraged to continually develop their technical skills including (but not limited to) structural, thermal and model driven engineering aspects of Mechanical Engineering.
Key Responsibility Areas:
1. Compliance: Ensure compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, considering all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, etc.
2. Research & Development: Inception, research and development of mechanical solutions and techniques that enable the team to advance the next generation of IR Detectors.
3. Technical Support: Support Programme Team in the delivery of product technical solutions (both analytical and practical) for all aspects related to Mechanical Engineering.
4. Design Generation: Generate mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
5. Tool Design: Product and production tool/fixture design, including fine detail definition.
6. 3D CAD: Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools.
7. Hands-On Implementation: Hands on involvement in practical implementation of development builds and Design of Experiments.
8. Support Procurement: Support Procurement and Manufacturing during the introduction of new products into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.
9. Work Package Management: Actively manage work package delivery elements to achieve desired quality, schedule, and cost.
10. Mentoring: Mentor junior members of the Cameras Team with respect to Engineering competencies and best practices.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge:
Experience in:
1. A minimum of an upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or experience of working within a highly regulated Engineering Industry.
2. Experienced 3D CAD user (ideally PTC Creo).
3. Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
4. Mechanical engineering detailed design - first-hand experience of engineering design, numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.
5. Working knowledge of BS8888 drawing standards and the application of GD&T.
6. Knowledge of various aspects of DFM/A.
7. Accustomed to working within a multi-discipline Engineering Team to deliver to schedule, cost and quality targets.
Desirable:
1. MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
2. Experience with working in Defence, Space or Medical Sectors.
3. Knowledgeable in working with vacuum assemblies.
4. Hands-on experience in working with optical assemblies.
5. Experience in the design of Electro-mechanical products.
6. Familiar with designing for harsh environments (Land, Sea and Air), including EMC.
7. Appreciation of Mechanical & Thermal Analysis, including ‘first pass’ analyses (PTC Creo Simulate, or similar).
8. Mechanical Engineering industry trends – an awareness of new and advancing tools, techniques and technologies.
9. Industrial experience in tools and fixtures design for small, detailed requirements.
10. Experience in the design of vibration test fixtures.
