Job Summary
Demonstrate competency as a phlebotomist. Responsible for day to day management for the taking of phlebotomy procedures. Lead and co-ordinate themselves for the Phlebotomy team within Worcester Royal Hospital. To co-ordinate the tasks required of the Phlebotomy team within the Outpatients department and the wards within Worcester Royal hospital. To mentor, supervise and teach new members of the Phlebotomy team and staff within the outpatients department. To support the ward and outpatients staff to provide a high quality service. Participate in service development.
Main Duties of the Job
The post holder will visit the wards on a daily basis providing a 7 day service to collect blood samples as requested by the clinical teams. The post holder will liaise with clinical and nursing teams and be aware of ward rules and procedures such as consultant rounds, treatments and protected meal times, which may require a modification in the phlebotomy schedules. The post holder will assess and confirm the patients' identity matches that on the request form, following trust policy. Any discrepancies must be reported to the appropriate clinician or nurse in charge. The post holder will ascertain the specimen requirements and collect blood by venepuncture into appropriate containers. The post holder will ensure accurate and legible labelling of specimen tubes, following the Trust Policy. The post holder will ensure that specimens are sent to the laboratory by the POD system or in person. The post holder will dispose of clinical waste in line with Trust Policies. The post holder will be expected to run clinics in the outpatient department. The post holder will also be expected to answer the phone and book patients into appointments and print out the patients' requests.
