Set amidst 100 acres of stunning parkland in Edinburgh and renowned for its academic achievements and sporting prowess, Merchiston Castle School is one of Scotland’s leading independent schools. As one of a handful of schools in the United Kingdom specialising in providing a high-quality boarding school education for boys, Merchiston enjoys an enviable reputation for its blend of traditional values with an innovative and forward-looking approach to modern education. Merchiston is a determinedly small school where pupils’ educational experience is tailored, their individual achievements celebrated and where all members of this diverse, supportive and close-knit community are known, understood, valued, and supported.
The Board of Governors now invites applications from inspiring leaders who will combine a strong educational vision with strategic insight to build on the School’s recent successes, including the launch of the co-educational Forest Nursery and Junior School in 2024. Merchiston is looking with ambition towards its 200th anniversary in 2033 and seeking a Head who can blend its rich history with further innovation, ensuring that the School continues to offer a world-class education and enjoy financial sustainability. The new Head will play a crucial role in increasing pupil numbers, expanding the School’s reach and building a culture of success and inclusivity that encourages both boys and girls to excel academically, athletically, and personally.
Applications are encouraged from candidates who have the interpersonal skills to inspire an experienced senior management team and talented staff, and the gravitas to command the respect of parents and pupils alike. A substantial track record of successful senior management experience is essential, as are strong intellectual abilities, a deep understanding of boarding and a strong grasp of the business dimension of modern headship. A genuine commitment to holistic education and boarding, preferably gained through experience, is highly desirable.
