A Tier One Civil Engineering contractor has a new opportunity for a Commercial Operations Director. The role forms a key part of the Senior Leadership Team within the Commercial Department and involves the provision of strategic direction and management of the commercial function through strong leadership skills to meet the business needs:

1. Oversee, direct and manage a team to deliver the commercial function of multiple projects ranging from £5m to £200m.
2. Fully understand and identify key risks and opportunities to assist decision making and actions that will ultimately protect and enhance the commercial success of the projects.
3. Take the lead in negotiations at principal stakeholder level on the projects with stakeholders to ensure all parties' expectations are being met. As part of the Senior Leadership Team, nurture and promote continuous improvements with the commercial staff, business practices, and policies.
4. Take the lead on projects with disputes, both formal and informal. Be a key decision maker and engage and instruct third party legal advisors and experts.
5. Report monthly on the financial performance and status of the projects. Ensure teams implement the commercial strategy in line with Company SOPs and within agreed limits of authority.
6. Engage with the Pre-Construction department to ensure continuous learning and feedback.
7. Influence and advise on tenders and ensure the commercial information thread is continuous from inception to completion. Promote company values in all dealings with other employees, clients, subcontractors, and other external contacts.
The ideal person will have been responsible for commercial activities on civil engineering projects. You will be degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or Construction Engineering, and have worked as a QS managing large-scale civil engineering schemes or multiple smaller projects at one time.
1. Experience working with different forms of building contracts - JCT, NEC, FIDIC, and bespoke.
2. Understanding of two-stage, single-stage, and negotiated tendering.
3. Experience of formal disputes (adjudications).
4. Confident communicating with colleagues and board members/senior management.
5. Strong commercial acumen.
6. The ability to work to tight deadlines.
7. Accuracy and attention to detail.
8. Flexibility in approach and a strong team ethic.
This position would suit a Commercial Manager/Managing Surveyor wishing to progress with a Tier One contractor to a Senior Management level.
