The Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield Bowel Cancer Screening Programme currently invites men and women aged 50-74 to complete an at-home test kit (Faecal Immunochemical Test – FIT). If positive, this offers them the opportunity to attend for a screening colonoscopy to determine whether they have bowel cancer or a potential bowel cancer. The programme also includes Lynch Surveillance patients.
The screening centre covers a large geographical area, including two NHS Trusts: Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust and the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust.
This post is suitable for an experienced, forward-thinking nurse with an interest in bowel cancer and screening programmes. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of clinical achievement, a desire to expand their expertise in bowel cancer screening, and a proactive attitude. They should be able to work autonomously, possess good organisational skills, and have a varied clinical background. The role requires the ability to work well under pressure and to be a team player in a busy and evolving service.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Act as the primary contact for referred participants, providing advice and assessing suitability for screening.
2. Conduct nurse-led clinics to assess participant suitability, acceptability, and fitness for screening, and request alternative examinations if needed.
3. Coordinate and monitor participants' screening journey, liaising with the screening team.
4. Use specialist knowledge and advanced communication skills to support patients emotionally, especially when breaking bad news and providing psychological support.
5. Act as the Key Worker for individuals with polyps or cancer detected during screening.
6. Ensure all mandatory datasets are completed promptly and accurately.
