The Opportunity
Join this Nuclear New Build (NNB) project team, a leader in the ambitious programme to construct 2 European Pressurised Water Reactors (EPRs) at Hinkley Point in Somerset and Sizewell in Suffolk. The Design Delivery Branch (DDB) manages and delivers the design of Ancillary Buildings, roads & networks, and electrical systems not covered by RD contracts.
The Site Buildings Team (SBT), part of the DDB, leads the design of Ancillary Buildings, including the Operational Service Centre, Auxiliary Boilers, Emergency Response Facilities, Security Facilities, and Waste and Storage Facilities. The team delivers comprehensive designs covering civil and structural design, mechanical systems, and electrical services, while coordinating other necessary systems.
Job Purpose / Overview
As part of the SBT, the SZC Engineering Lead will develop the design of SZC buildings and provide civil engineering support to the Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs). The primary purpose is to manage early design activities for the Ancillary Buildings' scope at SZC, progressing from concept and basic design to detailed design completion. This role involves managing external designers and leveraging support from the existing HPC team, acting as the principal point of contact within DDB for the allocated scope and serving as the Responsible Designer for this contract. Additionally, the role provides civil engineering input to MDTs as a Technical Specialist.
Principal Accountabilities
* Engineering Strategies: Support the development of SZC engineering delivery strategies.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Ensure effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
* Scope of Works Documentation: Manage the authoring for Contract Partner(s).
* Technical Specifications: Manage the preparation and development for design studies.
* Contract Management: Coordinate the technical assessment of contracts and provide technical management.
* Design Coordination: Oversee engineering design activities performed by Contract Partners.
* Technical Support: Provide technical support and information to Contract Partners as needed.
* Surveillance Management: Oversee the surveillance of Contract Partner(s) design work with NNB's technical management.
* Safety and Compliance: Ensure consistency with technical specifications, safety, and UK context requirements in design activities.
* Issue Resolution: Lead the resolution of transverse engineering issues or risks.
* Schedule Consistency: Ensure Contract Partner(s) schedules align with the global SZC schedule.
* List of Deliverables (LoD): Ensure deliverables are consistent with the agreed schedule(s).
* Design Gateway Coordination: Provide and coordinate engineering design gateway requirements and reviews.
* Stakeholder Comments: Manage and consolidate comments during the deliverables review process.
* Design Optimisation: Facilitate design optimisation through feedback across the project.
* Contract Discussions: Lead discussions with Contract Partners, supporting NNB Project Managers with early warning and compensation events.
* Risk Management: Record and manage perceived risks and trends effectively.
* Technical Interfaces: Manage all technical interfaces.
* Project Variation: Liaise with the NNB Project Manager for any scope variations.
* Risk Register Updates: Regularly update the contract risk register.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
* Educational Background: Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering discipline; Chartership appreciated.
* Design Management: Experience in managing and coordinating design on large multi-discipline infrastructure projects.
* Nuclear Industry Experience: Awareness of nuclear safety-related constraints is appreciated.
* Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of building design and construction.
* Engineering Procedures: Familiarity with RIBA Plan of Work 2020 or equivalent.
* Standards and Procedures: Experienced with UK building standards and engineering procedures.
* Personal Attributes: Accuracy, tenacity, diplomacy, results-oriented, leadership, and strong organisational skills.
* Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
* Confidentiality: Ability to maintain discretion when dealing with sensitive information.
* Languages: Proficiency in English; French is appreciated.
* IT Skills: Strong proficiency in engineering software packages.
