Research engineer, PhD | Geostatistics & Geophysics
Who are Net-Zero Geosystems?
Net-Zero Geosystems (NZG) is a start-up focused on the development of geoscientific simulation tools and services for CO2 storage, geothermal energy, radioactive waste disposal, subsurface energy storage (H2) and the permanent abandonment of oil & gas wells. The main focus of our work is to provide robust evidence-based tools to lower the operational risks of subsurface projects. We are driven to deliver rigorous high-quality outputs for our clients. We value transparency, honesty and compassion.
Our technology
Our principal technology predicts the probability of subsurface well integrity loss and leakages. Ensuring a sustained long-term containment of greenhouse gases and harmful fluids is crucial for all energy geosystems. Reliable well integrity prediction methods are key for gaining confidence in subsurface projects, obtaining regulatory & financial approval, and facilitating the implementation of economically viable measures for risk prevention and mitigation. Specifically, our technology will dramatically improve the longevity of wells and their resilience, reduce risk, reduce environmental impact, drive costs down, enable well re-purposing and ensure permanent containment (of CO2, radioactive materials, methane …)
The role
The Lead Computational Geoscientist will be driving the delivery and technical strategy of NZG’s R&D and applied projects, aligning them with the company’s business goals. They will lead a team of engineers, deliver innovative software, undertake scientific research and apply our technology for our client’s operations.
Research and development will be focussed on technical or user-oriented features, physics models (related to thermo-hydro-mechanical and chemical processes) and their implementation in our semi-analytical (analytics-FDM) and numerical software (FEM-DEM) for well integrity. Applications include modelling well integrity experiments and applying our numerical and statistical methodology to existing wells.
Responsibilities
1. Provide technical strategy for our R&D and applied projects in line with business objectives.
2. Provide technical guidance to a team of engineers and developers, fostering an environment of collaboration and continuous learning.
3. Lead the delivery of work packages (for R&D and applied projects), write deliverable descriptions, monitor progress and ensure deadlines are met, communicate with other team members involved, ensure necessary resources are available.
4. Lead the development of new software, physics model, theory documents, experimental and applied studies.
5. Regularly present research outcomes, project milestones, and development progress to the team, external stakeholders, and to the industrial and scientific community.
6. Travel to London to meet with the team and travel internationally to meet clients and partners, present at conferences.
About you
This position demands a balance of technical expertise, project management skills, and leadership abilities to drive cutting-edge R&D and client-oriented delivery. The ideal candidate is an excellent team player with extensive experience in developing numerical methods and physics solver (FEM, FDM, FVM…), advanced python/C++ skills, strong mathematics skills, knowledge of solid & fluid mechanics theory, and a background in Geosciences. In particular, we are looking for:
1. An experience in leadership
2. Empathy and compassion
3. Scientific rigour, attention to detail, creative thinking
4. 3+ years of relevant experience
5. A track record of delivering and meeting deadlines
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
7. Proficiency in Python/C++, Paraview, Linux, LaTeX, Git
8. Experience in deriving partial differential equations, developing implicit solvers (for thermo-hydro-mechanical and chemical coupled physics)
9. Experience in developing finite element, finite volume and finite difference software
10. A background in geoscience, in particular petroleum engineering
