Position Summary
The School Art Therapist will work closely with students, families, teachers, and school counselors to create a safe, supportive environment where students can explore and express their feelings through art. The therapist will use various art-based techniques to address emotional, social, and behavioral challenges, helping students develop coping strategies, improve self-esteem, and enhance emotional well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide individual and group art therapy sessions tailored to students’ needs
* Assess and develop personalized art therapy treatment plans for students referred by teachers, counselors, and parents
* Utilize a range of art materials and methods (drawing, painting, collage, sculpture) to facilitate emotional expression and self-exploration
* Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and school administrators to monitor students’ progress and make recommendations for additional support
* Maintain a safe, clean, and organized therapeutic art space that promotes creativity and expression
* Document and report on students’ progress while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to school policies
* Conduct art-based workshops and support group sessions on relevant topics, such as stress management, self-esteem, and social skills
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, professional development sessions, and school events
* Stay updated with best practices in art therapy and continuing education requirements
Qualifications:
* Master’s degree in Art Therapy, Counseling, Psychology, or related field with specialization in art therapy
* Licensed or credentialed as an Art Therapist (e.g., ATR-BC, LPC) or eligibility for licensure within [State requirements]
* Minimum of 1 year experience working with children and adolescents, preferably in a school or educational setting
* Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with students, families, and staff in a compassionate manner
* Creative and flexible, with the ability to adapt therapeutic approaches to meet the diverse needs of students
* Knowledge of ethical standards in mental health and school-based therapy practices
* Background check and clearances required upon hiring
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience working with children with special needs, behavioral challenges, or trauma histories
* Familiarity with crisis intervention techniques and conflict resolution skills
