An exciting opportunity has arisen for a creative Product Designer to join the NPD department at one of the UK’s leading shower manufacturers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design of innovative showering products and managing the execution of design projects from concept through to completion, focused primarily on New Product Development with support on other tactical customer products and current product development when necessary.
Overview:
* Responsible for New Product Introduction to ensure that NPD activity is delivered on time, on spec and on cost.
* Responsible for delivering parts, assemblies and design requirements from the concept stage to production.
* Deliver mechanical assemblies to meet design specifications.
* Write Product Design Specifications (PDS).
* Concept design and layout of new showering products to meet functional and cost requirements.
* Communicate ideas through drawings, sketches, CAD models and physical models.
* Support with any technical calculations using engineering theory.
* Work with Industrial Designers to ensure all appearance and ergonomic requirements are met.
* Design Proof of Principle and Prototype models.
* Organise the manufacture of models.
* Set-up tests, fixtures and procedures for testing.
* Test models and develop reports.
* Detail development to achieve functional requirement and allow manufacture and assembly of components.
* Define materials to be used in designs and the manufacturing processes to create them.
* Specify components in a design that can be sourced from a supplier – liaise and communicate with suppliers.
* Work with other departments as required to ensure a smooth transition through manufacturing into production.
Candidate:
* Excellent track record in product design engineering with 5+ years’ experience.
* Degree in Product Design, Design Engineering or other relevant engineering subject.
* Experience in the design of consumer products highly desirable.
* Knowledge and experience in the design of plastic injection moulded components, plastics and injection mould tooling for small to medium volume manufacture.
* Good working knowledge of other manufacturing processes and tooling i.e. die-castings and machined parts (aesthetic & functional applications).
* “Hands-on” skills - building of prototypes and product testing in the lab.
* Familiarity with electromechanical design including PCB’s, switches, solenoids, motors etc.
* Experience of tolerance analysis and clearance and fits review.
* Specific experience on NPD through to manufacturing and production.
* Excellent problem-solving skills.
* Creativity - good sketching skills and ability to articulate ideas on paper.
* Good understanding of design engineering, basic mechanical principles, electronics and how products work.
* High level of general communication skills both verbal and written.
* High standards on quality, responsive to teams around them.
* Be willing to share knowledge for the benefit/development of others.
