We are pleased to offer an opportunity to join our Integrated Therapy Team at the James Paget University Hospital, consisting of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians, assistant practitioners and support workers, all working seamlessly together. Our diverse Band 5 rotations are:
* Frailty Assessment Unit/Older People’s Medicine
* Acute Medicine
* Early Intervention Team
Rotations are six months long, giving you time to develop and embed new skills using our comprehensive Preceptorship programme as part of your ongoing development.
We offer excellent supervision, training and skill development opportunities within each specialism provided by supportive clinicians and opportunities to gain skills such as student supervision, audits and service development projects.

We are large enough to offer a number of rotational experiences but small enough to be able to respond quickly in delivering services in response to patient needs.

Main duties of the job
As a Band 5 Rotational Occupational Therapist, you will be responsible for your own caseload, working within a fast paced and energetic environment. You will need good organisational and time management skills to prioritise and manage your caseload efficiently and effectively.
You will be responsible for ensuring the use of effective assessment skills to identify, formulate, implement and evaluate individualised treatment plans based on analytical and clinical reasoning skills. Assessments primarily take place in hospital or in patients’ own homes and will include a holistic approach considering cognitive, functional and social aspects of each individual’s life.
You will need to have effective communication skills to ensure a successful multidisciplinary approach to patient care. You will also need to be able to demonstrate management of barriers to communication such as loss of hearing, expressive and receptive dysphasia, pain and fear, be able to motivate patients to maximise their potential whether it being around rehabilitation or planning safe and effective discharges.
You will also have non-clinical duties such as attending and being an active member of team meetings and peer support groups, partake in service development ideas, training and supervision of students and therapy assistant practitioners.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The core Band 5 rotations cover the following clinical areas:
* Stroke: Providing hyper acute and acute rehabilitation working to national stroke metrics and using a range of neuro-rehabilitation approaches
* Frailty Assessment Unit/Older Person’s Medicine: Working as part of the MDT to provide a holistic approach to management on the frailty ward as well as across our general medical wards including functional and cognitive assessments to increase independence and quality of life
* Acute Medicine/Neurology: Working with the neurology MDT providing specialist input to patients admitted with acute neurological conditions. Also assessing and supporting our palliative patients providing specialist skills to enhance the quality of life for this client group
* Cardiology/Respiratory/General Surgery: Providing specialist surgical management and enhancing patients’ surgical pathway to reduce complications and increase independence, and working as part of the MDT to provide specialist respiratory management within the Acute Medical wards using a range of respiratory skills
* Early Intervention Team: Working within Accident and Emergency and the Emergency Assessment and Discharge Unit to facilitate early supported discharge and prevent unnecessary admissions
* Orthopaedics: Working to deliver acute, holistic management for a range of trauma including femoral fracture and spinal cord injury. This includes cognitive assessment and management, functional assessment and physical rehabilitation within an integrated team

Knowledge and Experience
* Achieved or working towards a Degree/MSc in Occupational Therapy
* Current Health Care Professions Council registration/or soon to be applied for post-graduating
Skills, Abilities and Competencies
* Previous Band 5 experience/student placements or working areas relevant to post, e.g. frail elderly, orthopaedics, rehabilitation setting, admission avoidance and discharge planning, community working and must include acute NHS placements
* Enthusiasm for Band 5 post working within community and hospital settings
* Awareness of clinical governance and evidence-based practice and its implications for occupational therapy
* Good communication skills, able to build rapport and empathy
* Demonstration of ability to act independently/on own initiative and have the ability to know when to ask for help. Acute hospitals are high pressure environments and the ability to cope in this environment is essential
* Problem solving/analytical skills
* Team working skills (evidence of multidisciplinary team working)
* Proactive and self-directed in learning
* Role requires the ability to travel within the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area. Must hold a full current driving licence or be able to make own travelling arrangements to fulfil the duties of the post, including visits to patients’ homes with and without patients, delivery of equipment etc.
* Physically fit and able to comply with Trust Manual Handling Guidelines
