Our busy, modern hospital provides a full range of district general services, including an accident and emergency department, and links with satellite units in five community hospitals. We are the main provider of acute hospital services to a population of around 210,000, living within Weymouth and Portland, West Dorset, North Dorset and Purbeck. We also provide renal services for patients throughout Dorset and South Somerset; a total population of 850,000. Our 3,000 staff work in GP surgeries, schools, residential homes and people’s own homes as well as Dorset County Hospital and the community hospitals. Dorset County Hospital has approximately 400 beds, seven main theatres and two day theatres, and has been designed with a major commitment to Public Arts in Hospital. Related services are grouped into three connected wings: North, South and East. Entry to the hospital is gained via nine main entrances.

Job overview
We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic speciality grade surgeon. This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy general surgical team within a pleasant district general hospital, right in the middle of the beautiful Dorset countryside. The postholder will be required to support the general surgical ward activity, clinics and theatres plus participate in a 1:8 on call rota (split into 12 hour day and night shifts) which includes emergency CEPOD surgery.

The successful candidate would be expected to be able to lead initial clinical reviews of emergency and admitted patients, assist with general surgical and complex colorectal procedures in theatre and, subject to supervised practice, undertake some limited independent surgery. There will also be opportunities to run clinics under the supervision of the consultant body and potentially independently.
