Job summary
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust are looking for enthusiastic colleagues to work together as Clinical Teaching Fellows (CT1/2 level) in Critical Care to join our team from August 2025. The site location will be Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.
We have two posts available, both are full time and include working out of hours for the critical care service. Both roles are fixed term for 12 months from 6th August 2025 to 4th August 2026.
This is a combined clinical and teaching post, ideally suited to an individual who has completed a minimum of 2 years full time hospital service in the UK including some taster experience in anaesthetics or critical care and wishes to gain formal experience in undergraduate teaching and critical care prior to commencing Core Training. On average, half of the working week will be clinical and the other half devoted to teaching Bristol medical students. The post holder will be encouraged to embark on a course leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, which will be funded by the Academy.
This is not a recognised training post but provides an excellent opportunity to develop teaching and clinical skills as well as portfolio preparation.
You will gain experience in all aspects of critical care and encouraged to keep an up-to-date portfolio for CT applications. Interview practice and help with the portfolio is available, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to take part in surgical audits and other projects.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Teaching Fellows (CTFs) play a crucial role in delivering core curriculum content, tutoring, and assessing medical students. The CTF team promotes collaboration and knowledge-sharing among medical professionals, fostering career development and expertise in Medical Education.
CTFs will deliver a variety of teaching activities, including induction sessions, small group tutorials, clinical history and examination sessions, bedside teaching, teaching clinics, clinical reasoning skills, and simulation-based teaching.
This position is ideal for applicants who have completed foundation training or are taking a year out from specialist training. It offers an excellent opportunity to engage in teaching and pursue a clinical academic career path.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide teaching and educational supervision for medical students and trainees.
* Facilitate the delivery of the University of Bristol and Peninsula Medical School undergraduate curriculum to year 3, 4 & 5 medical students at Musgrove Park Hospital.
* Develop teaching materials.
* Participate in educational research, quality improvement projects, and presentations.
* Split role 50:50 between clinical duties in ICU and teaching.
* Attend local specialty teaching programs with support from the Undergraduate Education Faculty and Admin Team.
* Primarily based in ICU, with some airway experience days in theatre (no formal Anaesthesia training).
* Students will attend teaching sessions in Anaesthetics, ICU, and Pain.

University of Bristol
The students are from Bristol University Medical School and there are programmes involving teaching of Years 2, 3, 4, and 5 from a range of speciality attachments. The teaching programme is constantly developing and at present the focus is on years 2, 3 and 5. In summary the main duties include:
* Case Based Learning facilitation, anatomy and clinical skills teaching and SIM training. You will be expected to deliver some generic teaching (e.g., prescribing and clinical skills seminars)
* Develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches with guidance e.g., bedside teaching.
* Identify learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives.
* Ensure that content, delivery and materials will meet the defined learning objectives.
* Supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills.
* Develop your understanding of the dynamics of group work, addressing specific issues and helping groups and individuals as necessary.
* Be available to support specific topics, questions or concepts at request of individual students, subject to available time.
* Assess the work and progress of students and provide constructive feedback to students. This will also involve OSCE examinations and long case examinations as well as assessing through case-based discussion, mini-Cex and DOPS.

University of Plymouth
The post holder will have teaching duties for years 3, 4 and 5 students from Peninsula Medical School. This is a new post and will be developed throughout the year. The main teaching duties will include:
* Introduction and orientation to Y4 students during critical care rotation.
* Be available to support specific topics, questions or concepts at request of individual students, subject to available time including bedside teaching in ITU/HDU.
* Deliver Y5 weekly simulation based teaching programme.
* Provide tutorials on a range of topics to all year groups.
* Support delivery of clinical skills teaching to PMS students in Academy.
* Involvement in formal assessments including skills assessments and CPSA.
* Act as a mentor for students. Take an informal role in student pastoral care such as identification of "at risk" students and dysfunctional groups, offering support and referral to appropriate sources of help.
* Collaborate with other clinical teaching fellows.
* Involvement in the student selected component (SSC) and quality improvement projects is encouraged and developing appropriate projects for students to complete is an expected component of the role.
