We are recruiting for a consultant in Intensive Care and Acute Medicine. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants are required to hold Membership of an appropriate Royal College and have full UK or equivalent qualifications.
Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment and have entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following:
1. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)
2. Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). (CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful application)

Main duties of the job
The critical care unit is amongst the longest established critical care units in the UK. The clinical team is led by a multidisciplinary consultant body comprising of ten Consultants in Critical Care, all of whom have second specialty interests in either Anaesthesia or Research.
The vast majority of admissions (approximately 800/year) are emergency cases. There is a wide range of general medical, surgical, urological, ENT and orthopaedic/trauma cases. Whiston hospital hosts the regional burns and plastic surgery centre and offers excellent experience in the management of the critically ill burns patient.
The Acute Medicine Unit comprises of a 48 beds admission area with a stabilisation and close observation area. There is a dedicated 16 bed Assessment Unit for GP referrals with triage and reception areas and eight consultation rooms for clinical assessments.
This is a substantive 10 PA post, with a job plan in Intensive Care & Acute Medicine as follows:
Critical Care = 5 PA
Acute Medicine = 2.5 PA
SPA = 2.5 SPA
Weekday working: Critical care cover is provided using a 'hot week' style rota, with a 1 in 12 hot week frequency. Twice daily ward rounds daily are expected, with normally non-resident overnight cover.
Weekend on calls: Saturdays and Sundays are typically worked as two paired long days and two paired nights at different points in the rota. The frequency of on call days is adjusted to ensure that an annualised job plan of 10 PAs /wk is worked.

Whiston Hospital
Whiston Hospital is a busy teaching hospital which provides a comprehensive range of acute Medical and Surgical Services, Emergency Services, Maternity Services, Paediatrics and Medicine for Older People. The Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Units are also based on this site. There is a Critical Care Unit consisting of ICU, HDU, CCU and an onsite Cardiac Catheter Laboratory. The stroke consultants deliver 24/7 thrombolysis to eligible patients presenting with acute stroke. There is a 30-bed Stroke Unit which accommodates both acute stroke patients and those with rehabilitation needs.
St Helens Hospital
St Helens Hospital is an Ambulatory Care Centre providing Intermediate Care and Day Surgery. Rheumatology, Dermatology and Diabetes services are based on this site and within easy reach of other acute specialties at Whiston Hospital.
Southport Hospital
Southport Hospital is a General Hospital that includes adults accident and emergency services, intensive care, and a range of medical and surgical specialities. There is also an outpatients service. The North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport hospital provides specialist care for spinal patients from across the North West, North Wales, and the Isle of Man.
Ormskirk Hospital
Ormskirk Hospital is a General Hospital and provides womens and childrens services, including accident and emergency services, surgery, and maternity care.
The hospital provides these services for patients living across West Lancashire, Southport, and Formby.
