The areas that the Principal Laser Engineer would be expected to get involved in include:
Working within a multi-disciplinary team, you will help deliver the continued worldwide success of our product by ensuring the best optical design and manufacturing processes are adhered to, and you will contribute to ensuring that performance, cost, and schedule targets are met.
You will work at all stages of the product lifecycle to achieve this which will involve a mix of improvement and sustainment activities, as well as helping to deliver fresh innovations that will ensure we remain competitive in a challenging and rapidly-changing marketplace.
Your daily activities will be varied and interesting and will involve elements of product development, optimising manufacturing processes, and developing cost-saving designs.
To achieve this successfully, you will be well organised and capable of communicating clearly and efficiently on technical matters to a range of stakeholders, both internal and external to our organisation.
As with any complex product such as ours, things don’t always go to plan and when this happens you will use your specialist knowledge to join or lead problem solving teams to identify and implement resolution strategies in the knowledge that these will be cutting-edge and intellectually challenging.

The job offers custom working opportunities; however, due to the nature of the role, a significant on-site attendance at our production facility in Edinburgh is likely to be necessary, and may be required during normal working hours with limited notice.
Skills and Experience
Applicants for the role will be expected to demonstrate that they have experience in the following areas:
* Experience working in a laser product development and/or laser applied research environment. Ideally with experience in gas laser design and construction
* Knowledge of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems (preferably including design/specification experience)
* Previous ownership of a laser design which has been manufactured (in one-off or volume production).
* Experience in the development of optical drawing, with particular focus on modelling, specifying, metrology of high-reflectivity coatings.
* Experience using at least one of the following optical modelling packages: Ansys Optics Studio, MATLAB, Macleod, COMSOL.
* An appreciation of inertial sensing technologies including Ring Laser Gyroscopes
* An appreciation of the mechanical and electrical design aspects of laser systems.
* Experience working in a multidisciplinary team and engagement within the wider optical supply chain.
* Strong analytical, modelling skills and good laboratory skills are beneficial.
