Job summary
The Neurorehabilitation Medicine department at LTH currently has 2 consultants in rehabilitation medicine (RM) employed by LTH, and 1 consultant is employed by the neighbouring East Lancashire Hospitals Trust and provides sessional input to LTH. The successful applicant would join these consultant colleagues to provide specialist rehabilitation medicine consultant input to the Major Trauma and Neurorehabilitation pathways, taking lead consultant responsibility for patients from a defined geographical area in discussion with consultant colleagues, to ensure that there is a consistent service across the whole ICS footprint. The specialist rehabilitation beds at LTH are on Barton Ward (16 beds) and there are currently also 15 beds commissioned at the nearby Brain kind Lancashire Neurological Centre. The RM consultants also manage the intrathecal baclofen patients in conjunction with neurosurgery, and it is expected that the successful candidate will either already have, or commit to gaining, the skills to provide care for patients with intrathecal baclofen pumps. There is an Advanced Specialist Practitioner Physiotherapist who leads the botulinum toxin for spasticity service with support from the RM consultants.
Main duties of the job
The duties of the Consultant in Neurological Rehabilitation Medicine are to provide inpatient care to patients in the commissioned specialist neurorehabilitation beds, and to see patients referred to the rehabilitation medicine service on acute wards within our ICS catchment area, in outpatient clinics and in the community. Office accommodation and secretarial support will be provided.
The post-holder will:
Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and lead the co- ordinationof care for patients within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Assume a continuous commitment for the careof patients, even if employed less than full- time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
Provide specialist care for patients with intrathecal baclofen pumps.
About us
The Neurosciences Centre, based at The Royal Preston Hospital, comprises both Neurosurgery and Medical Neurosciences (Neurology, Neurophysiology, Neurorehabilitation). Allied neurosciences specialties are also on site (Neuropathology, Paediatric Neurology, Neuropsychology) and there are ongoing discussions with the local mental health trust about the appointment of a consultant neuropsychiatrist. The population served by the Neurosciences Centre is approx. million from the catchment area of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System (which is divided into 4 locality health systems - Morecambe Bay, Pennine Lancashire, Central Lancashire and Blackpool/Fylde Coast).

1. MRCP or equivalent postgraduate general medical experience.
2. Be within 6 months of gaining CCT in rehabilitation medicine or completing equivalent training outside the EU leading to entry on the specialist register for rehabilitation medicine.
