To contribute to the diagnostic histopathology service and partake in multi-disciplinary team meetings according to the appointee's special interests. The appointee will act as lead Histopathologist for at least one specialist area, covering PCI multidisciplinary team commitments. Responsibilities include participating in clinical audit, research studies, clinical governance, and teaching as appropriate.
Participation in histopathology EQA schemes relevant to the sub-specialty of choice and other activities to ensure continuing professional development is expected. The post holder will carry out teaching, examination, and QA duties contributing to undergraduate, post-graduate, and continuing medical education activity, including BMS dissection training.
The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed according to the needs of the service. It is desirable that the post holder holds a Certificate of Completion of Training or equivalent. The post holder should be trained in all aspects of general histopathology and non-gynaecological cytology and have or develop a special interest that complements that of the existing consultants.
Multidisciplinary team work is envisaged as a key component of the role, involving MDT discussions with colleagues by video conference or in person. The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
Development of sub-specialty interests that fit with PCI needs and the strategic direction of PCI is required, including active participation in audit. There is a requirement to specialise and undertake MDTs in agreement with existing consultants. This department is staffed by general pathologists, and the opportunity to take part in a wide range of work requires a flexible outlook.
Participation in clinical audit and continuing medical education is expected, along with providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting and conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
Management and Leadership Responsibilities
All consultants in Cellular Pathology are accountable through the Clinical Director to the PCI Board. Consultants are key members of the PCI Management team and are responsible for leading changes to service that will improve the patient experience.
Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the PCI Management Team. Contribute to the leadership and development of histopathology under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director, in line with the Trust's Business Plans. The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across PCI, including support to the Laboratory Director to achieve their objectives.
Work in partnership with colleagues within PCI and assist in the cost-effective utilisation of resources as part of the PCI Management Team. Work within PCI's framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical and laboratory policies and adherence to standing orders, standing financial instructions, and financial procedures. Provide cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within PCI.
Professional Responsibilities
Participation in continuing medical education using the Royal College of Pathologists scheme is required. Consultants must participate in specialised EQA schemes relating to their areas of interest and maintain GMC registration through the annual appraisal and revalidation process.
