Job Summary
We have created an exciting postCCT level clinical fellow position in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to provide advanced tertiary level training in advanced luminal endoscopy (complex gastroscopy, advanced colonoscopy, ERCP & EUS). This post would commence in Sept 2025 for 12 months.
This advanced fellow post is aimed at gastroenterologists who are nearing or have completed their CCT in Gastroenterology and have the required competency in diagnostic gastroscopy and/or colonoscopy to facilitate the limited endoscopy and service requirement for this post. It may be suitable for ST5-6 level gastroenterology trainees who have the required JAG certificates for gastroscopy and/or sigmoidoscopy and where an aptitude has been shown in one of the described sub-specialty luminal disciplines.
The post is designed to allow successful candidates to continue to develop their clinical skills and work towards an MD/PhD at the University of Birmingham if they wish. It will involve dedicated research or service development time while providing specialist clinical training in one of the described sub-specialties.
Main Duties of the Job
The team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham are national leaders in their respective fields. There may be a number of exciting future strands to the group's research portfolio including the use of augmented reality for Barrett's neoplasia detection, radiofrequency and argon plasma ablation for various new indications, and functional genomics for various premalignant upper GI diseases. Candidates will be expected to work on projects linked to translational research and audits in their respective sub-specialist fields.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the endoscopy service to deliver scheduled weekend and evening endoscopy activity and backfill in the working week or very occasionally as middle grade cover on the gastroenterology ward. The majority of time will be dedicated to improving the candidates' clinical acumen in the relevant sub-specialty through dedicated outpatient activity and relevant inpatient work, with the remaining time dedicated to research or service development projects. Work will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham site and the University of Birmingham campus, but occasional endoscopy list cover may be requested on other sites within the trust on weekends.
