Job overview
We are excited to invite applications for a substantive post for a Consultant Anaesthetist with a specialist interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia here at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The Anaesthetic Department at Kingston Hospital consists of 36 consultants and over 30 specialty doctors, trust grades and trainees. We are a motivated and supoortive group and were one of the first departments to achieve RCOA accreditation (ACSA), demonstrating our dedication to providing an outstanding quality of care and our enthusiasm to engage with national projects
There is an expectation that the post holder will deliver 6 elective all day Saturday lists on an annual basis.
Main duties of the job
In 2023 we carried out approximately 1000 elective procedures on children over 1 year of age, plus 200 emergency and trauma cases. Most of the elective work is in a day surgery setting, covering specialities such as ENT, dentistry, urology and some orthopaedics. The complexity of children being offered surgery is increasing and we are also looking at expanding our days surgery beds for paediatrics.
We also deliver anaesthetic services to a wide range of district general hospital specialities, allowing the successful candidate a varied and fulfilling consultant career. Expansion of services means there are opportunities for candidates with an interest in a range of specialities including regional anaesthesia, gynaecology and orthopaedics. We also provide anaesthetic services to one of the busiest and most popular obstetric units in London, with nearly 6000 deliveries per year and successful candidates would be able contribute to elective section lists.
We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals who will contribute to our friendly department, not just by providing high quality anaesthesia for the specialities we cover but also by supporting the department in the wider sense. We would expect the successful candidate to become our Lead Paediatric Anaesthetist in due course. We would like to see evidence of participation in quality improvement projects and research and Involvement in teaching and training.
