We are looking to recruit a Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) for our Cardiovascular and Thoracic service. You will need to have a high level of experience in acute clinical practice at band 5 Level/equivalent and have sound clinical knowledge whilst also demonstrating managerial and leadership abilities. Trainee practitioners will be expected to complete a MSc in Surgical Care Practitioners under the support and guidance of our medical colleagues.

Over the past several years, our team of committed and dynamic practitioners have developed the role of Surgical Care Practitioner from being just a job title to a well-defined, structured and respected career pathway. We’ve become expert practitioners within the field of cardiac surgery and we act as advisors for all members of the multidisciplinary team, offering support to both theatre nurses and junior doctors.
The Trust is offering a recruitment and retention premium for this role, totalling £5,000. This includes a £208 (pro rata) monthly payment and a £2,500 (pro rata) retention payment, which will be paid after one year of service. We are also pleased to offer support with relocation. Payment is subject to the agreement of the terms and conditions and can be discussed during the interview.
What you’ll do
Within the scope of the role, the Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) will be trained to deliver highly specialised intra-operative care to patients undergoing Cardiac Surgery. The SCP will communicate effectively with the patient and all members of the multidisciplinary team in the theatre environment.

To be successful in your application you will need to demonstrate the ability to autonomously manage acutely ill patients in diverse clinical environments. Diplomacy, excellent communication skills and a critical care qualification are essential to this role.
