About the Job
We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician.
This is a 24-month fixed-term contract, with the potential for a permanent role upon successful completion of the training. During this period, you will gain the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to become a qualified pharmacy technician. Applicants should be highly organised, motivated, and capable of meeting multiple deadlines. An understanding of the role of a pharmacy technician is essential.
Trainees who successfully complete the two-year course and associated study will be eligible to register as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Your duties will include, but are not limited to:
* Participating in dispensing activities (in accordance with SOPs and under the supervision of the pharmacist in charge/Responsible Pharmacist), ensuring the correct medicines are dispensed and appropriate for the patient.
* Dispensing and labelling medication for individual patient supply and stock items from various prescription types and requisitions, including making necessary records and endorsements.
* Following SOPs to ensure accurate record-keeping, stock control, and pharmacy workload statistics using the pharmacy computer system.
* Performing routine self-accuracy checks to ensure safe dispensing.
* Receiving prescriptions from customers, using questioning protocols to determine and document allergies, other medications, and exemption status accurately.
* Issuing dispensed and checked prescriptions to outpatients/customers, providing routine advice on medication use, and referring them to the pharmacist in charge/Responsible Pharmacist when further advice is required.
* Participating in the sale of over-the-counter (OTC) and miscellaneous items to staff and customers.
* Using established criteria (2WHAM questions) to identify patients who require a pharmacist referral when selling OTC products.
* Assisting in housekeeping duties in the dispensary, maintaining a clean and tidy environment with safe systems of work.
* Ensuring stock is stored safely and securely according to required storage conditions, advising healthcare professionals on storage, expiry dates, and stock rotation in line with SOPs to minimise wastage.
* Assisting in maintaining good stock rotation.
* Identifying and removing stock that is unfit for purpose, such as expired stock.
* Reporting all medication incidents in line with company policies.
* Communicating verbally or in writing, as appropriate, with patients, relatives, carers, pharmacy staff, and other healthcare professionals to provide and receive routine information.
* Working towards the NVQ Level 3 Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician (PTPT) qualification under the guidance of the pharmacist.
Essential Criteria
* Five GCSEs at Grades A*-C/9-4, including Maths, English Language, and Science.
* Able to work on own initiative.
* Eligible to register with the GPhC when qualified.
* Self-motivated to study independently.
Desirable Criteria
* NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Service Skills or other GPhC-approved minimum requirement for dispensing assistants.
* Previous experience working within hospital and/or community pharmacy or GP practice.
* Good computer skills.
Study Time
For your apprenticeship training programme, you will have one day per week allocated to attend your online training, with potential cross-sector placements at the local NHS trust and/or GP surgeries. You will need to be committed to learning and completing coursework by set deadlines.

£7.55 - £12.21 per hour
