Have you got what it takes to raise the most famous Bridge in the world?
The City Bridge Foundation (formerly Bridge House Estates) is a 900-year-old historic charity of which the City of London Corporation is Trustee. CBF has remained vital to London over the years and today its primary purpose is to maintain and support five of London’s most iconic Thames Bridges. During the past 25 years, our vision has expanded to tackle social and economic divides across the capital. Today we still maintain our bridges, but via our funding team, the ‘City Bridge Trust’, we distribute approximately £25m each year to support other charitable causes.
Tower Bridge, London’s Defining Landmark, is a working bascule bridge, leading events venue, and popular tourist attraction.
With over 800 Bridge lifts, 250 corporate and private events, and circa 950,000 visitors per annum, a dedicated technical team undertakes the logistics of operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic bridge machinery.
In addition, they carry out a range of facilities management duties from maintenance of building services, attraction equipment, IT, and audio-visual equipment, as well as providing technical cover at events including setting up/breaking down of furniture.
Technical Officers also represent the Bridge for marketing and tourism activities.
This post has specific ownership of electrical installations and components associated with bridge driving as well as facilities management, and we are looking for an individual with diverse and extensive experience of working within an engineering operation (electrical discipline), sound management skills, excellent IT and communication skills, and an appropriate technical qualification.
An important and high-profile role undertaken by the Technical Officer is raising the Bridge to allow river vessels access to and egress from the Upper Pool of London, involving close co-operation with vessel owners and the Port of London Authority Harbour Master. Training for this essential function is delivered by the established Bridge Drivers.
Health and safety on the Bridge is critical, and you will assist in managing and delivering our health and safety systems. Candidates should ideally be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of working within a similar environment, including working at heights, which is required for a number of tasks undertaken by the team.
The appointment will be on a 12-hour shift pattern, including a 1-hour lunch break, working 4 days on 4 off (averaging 38.5 hrs per week p/a) between 07:00hrs - 19:00hrs. Regular paid overtime working is required for bridge lifts and working at events for which overtime is paid.
