An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Gardener with enthusiasm to work as part of The Macallan Estate garden & grounds team. The role is predominantly responsible for the maintenance of the estate grounds, which are centred around on-site accommodation, Easter Elchies House & Ghillies House, as well as The Distillery, Warehousing and office buildings which comprise of formal lawns surrounding the houses, wildflower meadows, herbaceous/evergreen borders, and young & mature trees/woodland.
The estate extends to 485 acres comprised of distillery and guest operations and buildings, warehousing, woodlands, farmland and the River Spey fishing beat. As part of the estate management plan, an external horticultural contractor is employed to look after more basic maintenance operations including large areas of grass cutting, spraying and woodland management. The role holder of Gardener will be expected to manage this contractor during the day-to-day operations ensuring all maintenance tasks are carried out as agreed.
Sustainability, biodiversity and habitat management are central to the Macallan strategy, continued development of the estate will form a large part of this role.
Make an Impact
* Act as The Macallan ambassador to all guests on the Estate through increased knowledge of the brand and Estate
* Present updates on Estate development to colleagues
* Habitat and biodiversity management
* Supervision of horticultural maintenance contractors
* Assist the head gardener to develop the long-term landscaping and maintenance plan along with main horticultural consultants to achieve 5-star site appearance
* Undertake landscape design projects liaising with the Head Gardener for final design approval
* Maintain distillery green roof including irrigation system
* Working with the Estate Chef to develop home-grown produce by creation of a kitchen garden
* Assist kitchen and bar staff with knowledge of site native species
* Develop and maintain native species lists including location maps
* Working with Head Gardener and local foraging experts to investigate and record wild ingredients list and introduce indigenous species for use in the MDE
* All aspects of high amenity garden maintenance, such as weeding, pruning, planting, hedge cutting and grass cutting etc. in public facing areas, the main house and distillery surrounds
* Competent in the use of appropriate power tools, lawn mowers, hedge cutting, chainsaws and strimmers, training may be provided if required
* Liaising with internal stakeholders and maintenance contractor, updating them on the work being undertaken and making recommendations on ideas to improve and develop the garden and estate
* Carry out risk assessments for all tasks, contractor audits, site inductions with external contractors
* All other appropriate activities delegated by the Head Gardener
Your Talent and Skills
To succeed in this role, you must have extensive knowledge of plants, horticulture, and lawn management, along with expertise in kitchen gardening, habitat management, and biodiversity. Familiarity with local wildlife would be beneficial. You are passionate about working outdoors and possess excellent practical gardening skills. Self-motivated and well-organised, you demonstrate strong planning abilities and a friendly, professional approach. Ideally, you hold an SCQF Level 6 qualification in Horticulture or a recognised habitat and biodiversity qualification (or equivalent), with the ambition to progress to HNC level. PC literacy skills would be advantageous. Experience in conducting risk assessments, along with relevant qualifications such as IOSH Managing Safely, would be highly desirable. A solid understanding of environmental regulations, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to take an innovative approach when needed are essential. As this role involves travel around The Macallan Estate, a full, clean driving license is required.
