The post provides a fantastic opportunity to work as part of the phlebotomy team based at Weston Park Outpatients. The post holder will be undertaking phlebotomy on patients within the cancer network using clinical skills such as venepuncture. Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
As a phlebotomist, you will take blood samples from patients which are examined in a laboratory and the results can be used to quickly diagnose diseases and conditions. When taking blood, you have to:
1. ensure the patient is comfortable.
2. be aware of any nursing care that the patient is receiving.
3. take the blood correctly so it can be used for testing.
4. label the samples carefully.
5. store the blood correctly.
6. deliver the samples promptly to the lab.
Patients may be nervous about having their blood taken, so you will need to reassure them and put them at ease.
Main duties of the job
As a phlebotomist, you'll need:
* to be caring and kind.
* willing to be hands-on with patients.
* to be able to put patients at ease - they might feel anxious about giving blood.
* able to follow instructions and procedures.
* able to work in a team but use your own initiative.
* able to explain procedures to patients, careful and methodical.
You'll also need:
* good organisational and observational skills.

Location: The base for the service is Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield, S10 2SJ. However, the post holder may also be required to undertake duties at any of the other sites where Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is responsible for delivering cancer treatment activity. It is anticipated that this may include the hospitals at Barnsley, Chesterfield, Rotherham, Doncaster as well as any other sites within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Cancer Network.

Person Specification
Experience
* Experience of time management skills and prioritising work.
* Relevant experience of working in a health care setting as a phlebotomist.
* Experience in venepuncture.
Education and Qualifications
* Level 2 QCF Diploma in Clinical Healthcare support/ Level 2 NVQ in Healthcare/Health & Social Care.
* GCSE A*- D (4-9) in English Language or equivalent (e.g. Certificate in Adult Literacy at Level 1).
* GCSE A* - D (4-9) or equivalent in Mathematics (e.g. Certificate in Adult Numeracy at Level 1).
