Quantock Ecology is a well-established, independent ecological consultancy providing expert ecological services across the Southwest and Southern England. Our team delivers high-quality ecological surveys, mitigation plans, and environmental consultancy services in support of a wide range of projects. We specialise in areas such as Bat Licence Applications, Biodiversity Net Gain, Ecological Impact Assessments and ecological planning support. Due to increasing demand, we are seeking an Assistant Ecologist to join our team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside experienced ecologists, with excellent development opportunities for a motivated individual looking to grow in the field of ecology.
Role Overview
As an Assistant Ecologist, you will support the team in conducting ecological surveys, compiling reports and assisting with project management tasks. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone early in their ecological career to gain valuable experience and further develop their skills in a professional, supportive and team-focused environment. You will work on a variety of projects, gaining hands-on experience in ecological consultancy, species surveys, habitat assessments and ecological report writing.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist in conducting a wide range of ecological surveys, including surveys for bats, birds, reptiles, great crested newts, dormice, badgers, and other protected species.
* Support habitat surveys and classification, including identifying priority habitats and understanding the UKHab classification system.
* Help compile and write survey reports, data analysis and contribute to the production of method statements and mitigation plans.
* Assist in carrying out fieldwork, ensuring accurate data collection and maintenance of detailed field notes.
* Participate in ‘out-of-hours’ surveys, including bat emergence surveys (overtime is paid for out-of-hours surveys, or TOIL can be taken).
* Assist senior team members with more complex projects.
* Ensure accurate and well-organised data records are maintained through project management software.
* Take responsibility for some project management tasks under the guidance of senior consultants, ensuring deadlines are met and work is completed to a high standard.
* Stay updated on ecological best practise, wildlife legislation, and relevant industry developments.
The Ideal Candidate
Essential :
* A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
* Strong interest in wildlife conservation and ecology.
* Proven experience in conducting ecological surveys or a keen willingness to develop this skill (internship, volunteer, or previous professional experience is an advantage).
* Basic understanding of UK wildlife legislation and its application.
* Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
* Strong organisational and time-management skills.
* Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with a keen eye for detail.
* Full UK driving licence and ability to travel to survey locations.
* A proactive, enthusiastic attitude with a strong desire to learn and develop in the field of ecology.
Desirable :
* Experience in bat surveys, or willingness to obtain a bat survey licence (Level 1 or above).
* Interest in specialising within an ecological field of study and obtaining equivalent licensing.
* Familiarity with ecological survey methodologies.
* Experience in GIS (QGIS preferred) and ecological survey equipment.
* Experience with report writing or data analysis.
* Previous experience with Biodiversity Net Gain or ecological impact assessments is a bonus.
What We Offer
* Competitive salary (£23,000 – £26,000 per annum).
* Overtime pay for out-of-hours bat surveys, or TOIL.
* Extremely flexible working hours, including options for hybrid work.
* 25 days annual leave + statutory holidays (pro-rata).
* Bespoke training budget to support your professional development.
* Company pension scheme.
* Optional company benefits and performance based incentives.
* A supportive, team-oriented working environment.
* Opportunities for career progression and professional development within a growing company, with direct one-to-one support from a line manager.
