The post will require agile working with 2 consecutive days per month on site at Plymouth, you will be expected to be flexible to meet the business needs. The role will also require occasional access to radiologically controlled areas, working onboard vessels and in confined spaces. Contract Estimated Duration – 12 months This role has been deemed inside of IR35 Location Plymouth (remote with 2 consecutive days per month on site) The role Your primary focus as a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Building Services) will be maintaining and controlling modifications to, and deviations from, the design intent of the Building Engineering Services for the nuclear implicated and non-nuclear mechanical systems and acting as the custodian of reference design documentation. Your duties and responsibilities will be You’ll be responsible for supporting design activities from requirements capture, design development from concept through to detailed design, implementation and close out, to through-life support, decommissioning and disposal. You will be focused on ensuring compliance with site Licence Conditions, statutory legislation and design codes / standards, producing design guidance, substantiation and analyses, and delivering against agreed budgets/timescales. To support the Mechanical & Nuclear Process Manager and Principal Engineer Mechanical Systems for maintaining the Design Intent of Mechanical Services systems owned and operated by the Client. Provision of technical support, advice, guidance, and resolutions to optioneering studies, design reviews, HAZOPS etc. To support the Principal Engineer Mechanical Systems in the provision, management and development of professional SQEP Design Engineers. Technical supervision of staff reporting to the post holder in accordance with Company procedures. Leading and working within a team of engineers, planning, and organising tasks and facilitating progress. Managing own workload, maintaining, and updating staff workload and working to time allocations. Understanding of project briefs and the development and delivery of designs in accordance with the design process (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detailed and Implementation phases) and relevant legislation. Production of design documentation and supporting assessments, acting as lead author where appropriate. Design and specification of Mechanical Building Services systems - heating, cooling, ventilation, controls, etc. Production of detailed calculations using industry standard digital tools inc. Hevacomp, etc. Preparation of technical specifications, reports and technical note writing. Performing, and where appropriate checking, design analyses and associated activities. Performing, and where appropriate leading, quality checking services with adherence to all quality, environmental, governance and company processes Liaison with our CAD team to prepare models and drawings. Representing Mechanical Services Technical Authority by leading on-site visits and where appropriate, providing guidance and leadership to staff. Conduct site surveys, inspections, and monitor site works. Representing the client at meetings with stakeholders and contractors. Lead the provision of advice to line management and other key stakeholders, on the implementation and maintenance of design documentation and compliance with relevant codes, standards and legislation both nuclear and non-nuclear. Maintaining complete records and archives to company standards. Managing mechanical elements of project delivery and an understanding of budget costings. Produce estimates and assist commercial departments in the production of outgoing tender responses. Provide technical analysis of incoming tenders. Resolution of design sub-contract technical queries. Reviewing project progress, including reporting any changes of scope. Assist with technical development of junior staff. Including organising appropriate ongoing training, mentoring and developmental support for staff.You will have the following qualifications and experience Preferably Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification, in Building Services Engineering/Mechanical Engineering or related subjects. Chartered Engineer with CIBSE or IMechE, or working towards CEng. Or at least NVQ Level 5 in an engineering discipline and preferably a registered professional status with an Institute e.g. CIBSE, IET, IMechE. You’ll need to be able to obtain SC-Clearance before starting. Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences Experience of working in a design consultancy and/or experience of working within a contractor design environment. Knowledge / experience in managing a small team of engineers. Good level of computer literacy in a range of digital tools. Understanding of mechanical engineering principles for the design, operation and maintenance of Steam & Condensate, Industrial Gases, Fresh Water, Demineralised Water, HVAC, Domestic Water services etc. Knowledge of the design lifecycle Detailed knowledge of appropriate, regulations, legislation and technical standards that are applicable to mechanical services system design. Knowledge of operating within nuclear or other high-hazard environments Familiar with energy reduction methods and approaches to decarbonising new and existing buildings. Including principles of building physics such as passive design solutions. Experience of commissioning and post installation evaluation of performance. Pro-active, ability to take charge of project deliverables, make decisions and act on own initiative. Good organisational and time management skills working within time and cost budgets. Good communication skills, both oral and written, including report writing. Experience of making presentations to and attending meetings with clients/stakeholders. Questioning attitude. Attention to detail. Logical approach to problem solving and provision of advice. Flexible approach to allow for reactive nature of work. An ability to work with others and independently.
