Overview
Education Scotland is the national improvement agency for Scottish education and an executive agency of the Scottish Government. Our role is to promote improvement through inspection and review, innovation and change, providing support and challenge to the education system. Our programme of inspection reaches all sectors from early learning and childcare to adult learning and allows us to gather evidence of what is working well in our education system, areas which are showing improvement, and areas where further development is needed.
The Editor reports to the Head of Content. They are responsible for templating, formatting, editing and proofreading documents on time and to a high standard. They champion the house style, liaise with and advise authors, prepare final content and assist with the team’s general work and responsibilities.
Responsibilities
The core responsibilities of the role are outlined below. However, this is an overview of the role and is not exhaustive. Education Scotland reserves the right to assign other duties appropriate to the grade as required.
• Providing a high-quality copy editing and proofreading service. Preparing a wide range of documents and products for publishing.
• Being a point of contact for enquiries concerning use of the inspectorate’s brand and logo, including advising external stakeholders on brand and logo use. Giving robust advice to senior colleagues to ensure that all style, accessibility and brand issues are adhered to across all of the inspectorate’s publications.
• Working as an adviser for policy colleagues and other authors (without reference to a higher authority) to apply principles of plain English, good accessibility practice and the inspectorate style guides consistently across all our products.
• Working as an advocate for clear writing and encouraging colleagues across the organisation to engage with this.
• Assisting with the production of designed or printed materials.
• Assisting with the upkeep of the inspectorate’s style guide and glossary, ensuring that these are responsive and include current and correct terminology.
• Working collaboratively with teams across the inspectorate, providing editorial advice and support as they work on research reports, policies, the Annual Report and guidance pages.

Essential Criteria
1. Skilled at taking responsibility and accountability for quality outcomes, working to agreed goals and activities and dealing with challenges in a responsive and constructive way.
2. Substantial and demonstrable experience of editing, writing and proofreading to a high standard, taking into account house style, accessibility, including principles of clear writing, and audience.
3. Able to maintain strong productive relationships with teams across a wider organisation, including advising senior colleagues. Thinking strategically and working proactively to improve the quality of written content.
4. Proven interpersonal skills, confidence in dealing with a range of key stakeholders; experience of collaborative working and the ability to build and maintain strong and effective working relationships.
Location
This role can be based out of one of our Education Scotland office locations, Glasgow, Livingston, Dundee or Inverness. This post is hybrid working in line with current Scottish Government policies.

Scottish Government is preparing for the implementation of a new HR and Finance platform and, as a result, some job offers will be subject to an October 2024 start date at the earliest. This will be confirmed as your application progresses.
