NHS Shetland is the most northerly health service in Scotland and is a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. However, what we lack in size, we more than make up for by way of highly integrated, person centred and multi-professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations.
An opportunity has arisen to join a diverse team of Medical and Emergency Medicine Consultants in the provision of healthcare in the Shetland Islands. The job of Consultant Physician in Acute/General Medicine in the Gilbert Bain Hospital is for someone who wishes to practice a wide-ranging role as generalist and not that of a super specialist or narrow focused physician. As the role can be demanding and patients present with a broad range of pathologies, the medical consultants work closely and collaboratively together offering mutual support and advice, which is also the case across the wider consultant team. In addition to seeking support of locally based colleagues we are also able to seek advice from a wide range of specialist colleagues in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, our local tertiary referral centre. We would welcome applications from clinicians from an Acute or General Medicine background.
The post holder will be expected to provide initial care for acutely unwell adults and children across a range of medical presentations. It is recognised that the provision of initial paediatric care is out of the premise of most CCT holders. NHS Shetland is willing to discuss this with any potential applicants and any targeted funded package of training that would be required on taking up the post – see appendix one.
We are offering either a full-time post (WTE 1.0) with a standard contract or part time posts with a contract for 30 weeks per year (WTE 0.58 for 1:4 on call). This is an established blended model and consultants will be joining a team that includes doctors who live and work in Shetland on a permanent basis, alongside colleagues who provide part time, rotational cover.
The part-time consultant posts will have a job plan which requires them to work in Shetland up to 17 weeks per year, on a rota providing blocks of cover 4 weeks at a time (which equates to four weeks in every twelve weeks). A further 13 weeks will be paid to enable the consultant to maintain their clinical skills and special interests (e.g. accessing CEPD, pursuing research interests, global health etc.). NHS Grampian is our nearest tertiary centre, but the consultant will be able to establish an honorary contract with another suitable organisation, as appropriate to meet their needs. Relevant Travel and Accommodation costs will be covered by NHS Shetland but may be classed as a Benefit in Kind and subject to tax.
The full-time post holder will work in a team to cover the 24/7 rota for Acute Medicine in Shetland with an on-call commitment of 1:4 prospectively.
Closing Date: 1st September 2024
Interview Date: w/c 16th September 2024
In promoting equal opportunities, we welcome applications from all sections of the community.
