We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Geriatrics on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Geriatrics department.
Our client currently is one of seven Local Health Boards in Wales. It provides acute, community and mental healthcare services to more than 600,000 people living in South East Wales, and is one of the largest and busiest NHS health boards/Trusts in the UK. It is responsible for delivering services through its three acute hospitals in Newport, Abergavenny and Caerphilly, supported by five community hospitals, health centres and extensive mental health and learning disabilities facilities.
Our clients elderly care service currently provides acute medical care, rehabilitation assessment and treatment, falls & orthogeriatrics, intermediate care, EFU and stroke as well as running specialist clinics. The Consultant will be supported in the Wards by a F1, F2, CT1. The Health Board is also leading the way in Wales in appointment and training of Physician Associates.
The successful appointee will be asked to undertake various duties within the department, including:
1. Provide, with consultant colleagues (as appropriate), a service mostly in Care of the Elderly and supporting the development of care of older persons service to the hospitals.
2. Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
3. Support the development of a Specialist interest i.e. Frailty, surgical liaison, incontinence.
4. Share the responsibility of COTE patients providing prospective cover for colleagues.
5. Undertaking post-take ward rounds during on-calls.
6. Assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, SpRs, STs and other staff as appropriate.
7. Act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff.
8. Undertake clinical governance and audit duties.
