Job Summary
Our client is looking for several bench joiners to join their team.
As a bench joiner, you will be responsible for manufacturing and assembling timber components to create furniture, fixtures, and structures according to specifications and drawings. Your primary tasks will involve working with various types of wood, hand tools, and machinery to cut, shape, and join pieces accurately and efficiently. You will interpret technical drawings and measurements to ensure the finished product meets quality standards and client requirements. Attention to detail, precision, and craftsmanship are essential in this role. Additionally, you may be required to collaborate with other staff members to complete larger projects on time.
You may at times be representing the company on sites or within the workshop. You are expected to always act with professionalism and maintain a positive attitude when doing so. Supply of own basic power tools is required.
Pay & Hours
Pay: £14-£17 per hour rate, overtime paid at 1.25x.
Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-4.30pm.
Responsibilities
· Drawings: Reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
· Material Preparation: Selecting and preparing materials for construction, including cutting them to size and ensuring they are free from defects.
· Hand Tools & Plant: Using hand tools and machinery to cut, shape, and assemble components made from timber and other materials.
· Joinery Techniques: Utilizing various joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon, dovetail, and biscuit joints to assemble timber components accurately and securely.
· Finishing: Cleaning up products to meet the quality standards set by the finishing department, ensuring a satisfactory appearance and surface quality.
· Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving errors to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules, employing a systematic approach to diagnosing problems, analysing root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
· Collaboration: Working with other departments to troubleshoot and problem-solve during the construction process, ensuring seamless integration of bench joinery processes into the overall manufacturing workflow.
· Safety Compliance: Adhering to all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues, including keeping walkways clear as well as fire safety equipment.
· Time Keeping: Clocking in and out using the barcode system as part of the company’s fire safety policy.
· Quality Control: Inspecting finished products for quality and accuracy and signing off on dockets as part of the company’s quality control policy. Record any faults using the fault sheet on the reverse of the time sheet.
· Barcode System: Clocking onto jobs barcodes and filling out time sheets for job costing and time management purposes, informing line managers if the barcode scanning system is not working, and notifying the line manager if hours may be exceeded when working on a job.
· Loading Lists: Producing accurate loading lists for each job, ensuring that all necessary items for product installation on-site are clearly labelled, facilitating efficient tracking, and preventing loss of items during installation.
· Training: Providing training and guidance to apprentices in all aspects of joinery, from developing a strong work ethic to mastering technical skills, including conducting training sessions, preparing instructional materials, and offering ongoing support and mentoring.
· Documentation: Overseeing the organization and management of construction drawings and paperwork (such as cutting sheets and dockets) to ensure accurate tracking and timely accessibility throughout project lifecycles.
Required Skills
· Joinery Knowledge: In-depth understanding and proficiency in woodworking techniques, materials, machinery operation, and bench joinery practices. This includes certification or extensive experience in bench joinery. You should demonstrate the ability to work with precision, attention to detail, and craftsmanship to ensure the accuracy and quality of finished components.
· Other Materials: The ability to work with and install materials required as per client specifications. This could include glass, metal, and composites etc.
· Precision: Keen attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work with tight tolerances and accurate dimensions
· Machine Operation: Proficiency in operating a variety of woodworking machinery including saws, planers, routers, and sanders.
· Drawings: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and measurements.
· Communication: Clear and effective communication skills to collaborate with team members, convey technical information, and provide training and support to others.
· Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues when constructing products.
· Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and stand for extended periods.
· Safety Consciousness: Strong commitment to workplace safety practices and regulations, with the ability to identify and mitigate potential hazards associated with bench joinery operations.
· Organization: Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
