The Care Teams are the heart ofour organisation, consisting of dedicated nurses, healthcare assistants, andsupport staff. They provide compassionate and personalised care to childrenwith life-limiting conditions, focusing on pain management, symptom control,and emotional support for both the child and their family. The Care Teams worksclosely with medical professionals to ensure holistic care is tailored to eachchild's needs.
Main duties of the job

Shooting Star Childrens Hospicesprovides specialist care and support to families who have a baby, child oryoung person with a life-limiting condition, or who have been bereaved. RatedOutstanding by the Care Quality Commission, we support families acrossSurrey, north-west London and south-west London from diagnosis to end of lifeand throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional andmedical care.
Our specialist care and support isfree of charge to families and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Itincludes specialist nursing in the community, symptom management and painrelief, overnight respite stays, end-of-life care, specialist bereavement careand a comprehensive range of therapies, groups and clinics for the wholefamily.
At the heart of what we do are ourdedicated staff; their exceptional commitment and professionalism means everyfamily has the opportunity to make every moment count .
It costs £10 million a year to run ShootingStar Childrens Hospices. Just 30% of our funding comes from the government, sowe rely on our supporters generosity to keep the service running. We employ175 members of staff, including 98 nursing and medical staff, and support around700 families.

b) Main duties and key responsibilities
CLINICAL:
To be a clinical expert within the speciality of paediatric nursing,ensuring the provision of excellent, evidence based nursing care for thechildren, young people and their families at all times
Ensure that each child/young person is assessed, and that their care isplanned, implemented and evaluated in negotiation with the family and that thisis accurately documented and up to date
Liaise with clinical, non-clinical and facilities staff in order tomaintain a safe, friendly and welcoming environment for the children/ youngpeople, families, visitors and staff
To act as an advocate for the child / young person and family ensuringthe provision of appropriate information and support services
Ensure effective communication between all members of themultidisciplinary team, parents, relatives, visitors and external agencies
In conjunction with the Lead Nurses, develop and monitor clinical andnon clinical performance standards, taking action as required
Ensure cleanliness and infection control standards are maintained withinthe clinical area taking appropriate action where these standards are notmaintained and escalate to Lead Nurses/ Heads of Care where necessary
To develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary toprovide holistic, evidence based nursing care. This includes completion of theShooting Star care competencies
Ensure that care staff use equipment safely and are aware of the uses,safety precautions, handling, cleaning and maintenance of equipment in thehospice
To be competent in the use of all relevant IT systems ensuring that datais entered in an accurate and timely fashion, in accordance with SSCH policyand procedure
Participate in the on-call rota
MANAGERIAL:
Ensurethe provision of appropriate supervision and support to members of the careteam
Supportthe provision of effective communication between all SSCH services, all membersof the multidisciplinary team, families and visitors
Takethe lead on specific areas of management responsibility as allocated by thelead nurse
Ensurequality care is given, by being familiar with agreed hospice and SSCH standardsof care and to inform seniors if the required standard cannot be reached
Manageallocated resources effectively and efficiently. This includes maintaining the correct skillmix of staff for the childrens dependencies, bed management, utilisation oftime and equipment
Assistin ensuring the safety of the hospice, and the risk management process byactively participating in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues,including the managing and reporting of incidents
Toensure that staff know where to access Shooting Star policies and clinicalprocedure guidelines and that staff adhere to these at all times
Toensure compliance with the Health and Social Care Act regulations 2010 byensuring that you and staff in your supervision adhere to the Care QualityCommission standards at all times
Toensure you and staff in your supervision are aware of The Mental Capacity Act,2005, and Deprivation of Liberty (DOLS) safeguards and to ensure MentalCapacity Assessments and DOLS applications are undertaken appropriately
Towork closely with the Lead Nurses in Shooting Star to cross cover and deputisefor them in their absence
Actas an ambassador for Shooting Star Childrens Hospices
Toundertake relevant Shooting Star wide projects in agreement with the Heads ofCare
Participatein events or publications that promote Shooting Star and childrens palliativecare
EDUCATIONAL:
Toactively assist in the education and practical training of students, juniorstaff and multidisciplinary team members at every opportunity, through formaland informal teaching
Ensurethe provision of and access to appropriate mentors for student nurses andprovide a supportive and challenging environment for students in training
Participatein the audit of the clinical environment
Superviseand orientate students, temporary staff and staff new to SSCH
Toact as a preceptor for junior staff nurses
Tobe a resource for students and junior colleagues, facilitating the developmentof junior staff
Initiateand participate in audit and research studies relating to nursing andmultidisciplinary care, presenting findings through presentations and writingfor publication
Maintainown professional development and mandatory training
PROFESSIONAL;
Tomaintain confidentiality surrounding the child / young person and their familyat all times
Toensure that all care is documented and that all relevant documentation iscompleted accurately and within agreed timescales using Shooting Star approveddocumentation in line with NMC, CQC and Shooting Star standards
Todemonstrate a professional approach to work, and act in accordance with the NMCCode of Professional Conduct at all times
Toparticipate in staff appraisals, staff development and in service trainingactivities
Tomeet PREP requirements. To identify own learning needs and ensure ownprofessional development is maintained by keeping up to date with practicedevelopments
Toundertake further training and academic qualification as relevant to the roleand service requirements
c) Other Requirements
The post holder must be able and willing toget to and work in both hospices.
Thepost holder should be prepared to attend SSCH meetings in different parts ofthe country. Some meetings may be duringevenings or weekends.
Thepost holder will be required to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure and BarringService (DBS) check
Thepost holder must live within the area of work/within 60 minutes distance of Christophersas the post holder will be part of the on-call rota
d) Mandatory Criteria
Other duties
Thepost holder will be working in a developing environment and they will thereforebe expected to undertake other appropriate duties as required for the effectiveoperation of Shooting Star Childrens Hospices.
Professional Codes of Conduct
The post holder will be required to respectprofessional codes of conduct and practice relevant to their role, asappropriate.
Health and Safety
Thepost holder will be responsible for health and safety in the area under theircontrol and they must ensure that they are familiar with Shooting StarChildrens Hospices policy on health and safety at work.
