The purpose-built Community Diabetes Centre was opened in 1996 and is located on the Kettering General Hospital site. The department has close links with Leicester / Cambridge for endocrine issues and Oxford, to whom patients for pituitary surgery are traditionally referred and with Northampton, where patients would be referred to receive radioactive iodine for benign thyroid disease as well as vascular intervention/surgery. Kettering, Leicester and Cambridge endocrine team meet monthly for discussion of complex cases.
Diabetes care benefits from input of expert nurses, podiatrist and dietitians as well as organised MDT meeting/teachings. A range of general and speciality clinics happen in both diabetes and endocrine.
The appointee will join a team of 5 existing consultants who currently deliver a mixture of inpatient and outpatient diabetes and endocrine services for the Trust. Due to the changing dynamics of chronic disease management, the structure of the consultant team is under continual review in order to facilitate an efficient interface between primary and secondary care.
Main duties of the job
This is a post will aid us to formalise and standardise a new model of delivery of care for inpatient general medicine with a special interest in diabetes and endocrinology.
The appointee will NOT have a commitment to the acute general (internal) medicine on call rota although in the unlikely event this is desired by the appointee, this can be negotiated with the Chief Of Medicine at a later date.
Job Purpose: You will be expected to:
* Support and deliver specialist services in Diabetes and Endocrinology for both in-patients and outpatients.
* Help develop guidelines and care pathways to ensure the highest standard of specialist/generalist care is delivered.
* Be involved in teaching for undergraduates on placement and for doctors in training.
* Provide specialist input to in-patients both on the diabetes ward and throughout the Trust.
* Deliver inpatient and outpatient diabetic foot care as part of an MDT.
Outpatient work will involve diabetes and endocrine clinics at the Kettering General Hospital site. The appointee will share a medical ward with three consultant colleagues and will be supported by a team composed of 3 SpRs (One with NTN number rotating in Diabetes and Endocrinology within the South Trent Deanery), and 2 Trust grade registrar, 2 CT2, 2 FY2, 1 GPVTS, 3 FY1 junior doctors.

Job responsibilities
Department, as part of the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire, has established an academic link with Leicester Diabetes Centre, University of Leicester and soon will be appointing the first academic consultant who will have 50% academic (University of Leicester) and 50% clinical job (Diabetes and Endocrine Dept, Kettering). Qualifications
* GMC Registration
* Inclusion on Specialist Register or to be within receipt of CCT within 6 months of interview.
* MD, PhD
Knowledge/Experience
* Wide experience in General Medicine and Diabetes / Endocrinology.
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for patients.
* Previous experience of working at consultant level.
Teaching and Research
* Actively encourages research with junior and other MDT staff.
* Experience of participating in clinical audit and clinical research.
* Experience in organising and delivering teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
* Presentations at national and international meetings.
Qualities
