Our opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Systems Safety Engineer to join Thales Land and Air Systems (LAS) who provide a range of defence and air protection products for the UK and international customers.
You will be responsible for ensuring that we design and deliver products that can be certified to international standards and can be safely used by our Customers.
You will plan and manage safety related activities within bids and projects to ensure the end product risk has been reduced so far as is reasonably practicable.
You will also lead and conduct the hazard analysis activities and development of safety & environmental requirements for IAS products throughout their lifecycle. It will provide direction to the design teams for the implementation of requirements and design features to provide the necessary safety assurance and safety argument.
You will work closely with Project and Product team members, members of the S&EM team, customer Project Team members, and Customer Subject-matter experts, e.g. Safety Managers, DOSG advisors and Sub-contractor Safety Representatives
Day to day you will:
5. Take responsibility for identification and delivery of all aspects of the S&EM design activities as part of an Integrated Project Team in accordance with the IAS safety management system.
6. Carry out hazard analysis, risk evaluation and specify S&E requirements in the areas of performance, engineering features, interfacing and testing requirements.
7. Communicate a reasoned argument to all disciplines across the project team for the inclusion of S&E measures in order to ensure adherence to all the derived S&EM requirements.
8. Maintain and ensure compliance to S&EM processes and procedures.
9. Maintain a good understanding of all relevant S&E standards and regulations and ensure they are followed in IAS.
10. Plan and estimate the cost of project S&EM engineering activities.
11. Prepare hazard analysis reports, safety cases as well as development of valid safety arguments.
About you
You will have significant experience in a safety engineering role within an engineering environment and experience of leading safety engineering related activities together with the following:-
12. Good working knowledge of product safety standards and legislation
13. Broad knowledge of product safety engineering and environmental management practices
14. Ability to define and implement sound engineering design principles and methodology
15. Ability to carry out detailed safety analysis, risk evaluation and safety case construction using best practice approach
16. Ability to carry out detailed environmental analysis, impact and risk evaluation
17. Able to address project solutions from a whole life systems engineering viewpoint
18. Experience in a safety engineering role within an engineering environment
19. Experience of leading safety engineering related activities
20. Knowledge of product safety engineering and environmental management practices
21. Experience of working within an airworthiness environment
22. Good communication skills with excellent attention to detail
23. A methodical and logical approach to problem solving
24. The ability to present a reasoned argument for the inclusion of safety risk mitigation measures in a design
25. The ability to weigh up all available evidence and explore a designer’s rationale without entering into conflict situations
26. Ability to work as an integral member of a project team
